Political neophyte challenges Feingold

Political neophyte challenges Feingold
By Sean J. Miller - 06/25/10 06:00 AM ET

Republican Ron Johnson has never run for public office, but polls show him almost even with three-term incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.).

A Rasmussen Reports survey had Feingold getting 46 percent of the vote while Johnson had 45. An incumbent polling under 50 percent at this point in the campaign is usually a reason for concern.

Johnson made his first trip to Washington this week to meet with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and members of the Senate Republican Conference.

“Literally, three weeks ago I was a full-time businessperson,” Johnson, a successful plastics manufacturer, told The Hill. “This is not my life’s ambition.”

Johnson had a quick rise from neophyte candidate to GOP favorite for the nomination. He announced his run less than a week before the Republican Party’s state convention last month and was the surprise winner with 64 percent. Former state Commerce Secretary Dick Leinenkugel, who was considered the favorite, dropped out of the race after the convention and endorsed Johnson.

1. Ron Johnson is a Tea Party Republican....

...with very deep pockets who has promised to spend his entire fortune to get elected, if necessary.

He recently used Charles Murray, co-author of "The Bell Curve" to promote his campaign. To those not aware, the theme of "The Bell Curve" is that genetic differences exist between blacks and whites that account for much of the poor performance by African-American students. He also thinks IQ is the best way to judge an individual's chance at success and that some kids shouldn't be encouraged to go to college. It's a deeply racist book.

Worse, Johnson is trying to unseat Russ Feingold, perhaps the only honest Senator we have left.

Any help for Russ is appreciated.

2. So many Republicans that started out this election cycle are
gone, and so Republicans pluck someone who was a full time businessman that Paul Ryan can groom. Paul Ryan's goals are to improve entitlement programs for the rich. Since everyone wants to be rich, they think they can secure the vote.
