Are we going to have the Gore discussion?
I'm surprised with this hitting the news that such little discussion is going on. I don't have the TV on so don't know if any talk is going on there or not...

Anyway:...http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/the_gore_allegations_what_you_need_to_know.php?ref=fpb

1. We've been having it.
And it seems like the general consensus is that the accuser is full of shit. From what I've read of this story, I agree with the general consensus.

8. Read an interesting comment over at TPM
Apparently, the 'victim's' affidavit claims Gore was listening to Pink's "Dear Mr. President". If so, Gore would have to have gotten an advance copy as this incident took place months before the song was released. I'm skeptical...but I was also skeptical about the John Edward's story when that 1st broke....we'll have to see how this plays out. I won't be losing any sleep over it, though.

9. Yeah, she's definitely got ulterior motives here.
She skipped out on 3 hearings that she was supposed to attend and then claimed that she was only interested in pursuing a civil suit. Then she has the nerve to say that she's pursuing this for justice, not for money. If that were the case, I don't see why she'd only be interested in a civil suit.

22. It was on an April 2006 album
(I have a 19 year old who liked Pink)
So that's not true - but it doesn't make the story true. The police response was that there was not sufficient proof.

I am surprised that it is so quickly in Time, the NYT and the Washington Post. As the police took no action, he is not in public office or running for one, this seems wrong.
It could be just an embarrassing story based on a lie.

25. According to her own statements
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 05:31 PM by Rob H.
in this article, she didn't keep anything with DNA evidence on it. It'll be interesting to see whether she changes her story again. Note, also, the final sentence of the final paragraph:

"I did not immediately call the police as I feared being made into a public spectacle and my reputation being destroyed," she said. "I was not sure what to tell them and was concerned my story would not be believed since there was no DNA evidence from a completed act of rape. I did not even know what to call what had happened to me."

Detective Mary Wheat, a Portland police spokeswoman, said the woman contacted detectives this month and asked for a copy of her statement. The woman, according to Wheat, said she planned to take her case to the media.

Emphases added by me.

27. Yes and no
If the accusation were like Rielle and Edwards, where it was consensual sex, in Gore's case that is true - he is not running for anything. However if this outlandish story - that the police don't believe - were solid, then there is a problem. (ie let's say it were said to happen last night and the people in the next rooms spoke of her screaming at him to get off her etc - then there would be a problem - and likely a law broken. A woman always has the right to say no - and have anything stop. (Same goes with the guy)

But, the story is NOT believable. If there was nothing or if this $500 massage was more than a therapeutic massage, there should be no story.

35. Most romance novelists aren't "frustrated"
Romance readers have 74% more sex than the average woman, according to Psychology Today. Imagine what that stat is for those who write them.

I might also add that "forced sex" is not a popular plot device in today's romance novels.

Sincerely,
your local romance author

38. LOL! I actually didn't mean "romantically frustrated"
I was thinking about someone who was frustrated finding a publisher, an audience. I think the image of the "frustrated author" occurs more commonly in regard their success rather than their love lives.

However, I can't legitimately extrapolate data about the sex lives of romance novel authors from a study about romance novel readers. They're two distinct subsets, so "imagine" is all we can actually do.

But maybe you were trying to suggest I should congratulate you? ;)

45. I understand your comment about the "subsets"
and extrapolating the study material on to authors. When one stops to consider that 99% of those who write romance novels are also readers of romance novels (for market research/sheer enjoyment), the same statistics might apply.

Back to the actual subject of the thread: I don't know what happened to the woman in question, but she allegedly called Al Gore a "crazed sex poodle". I couldn't come up with that one on my most purple-prose day. You might have something there!

"I squirmed to try and get out of his grasp, telling him to stop, don't, several times and I finally told him and said, You're being a crazed sex poodle"

"Get off me, you big lummox!"

Rape, or attempted rape is very serious. I was on the receiving end once and somehow the word's "lummox" and "poodle" didn't readily pop to mind. But that's just me and I'm not a $500 an hour massage therapist that visits hotel rooms at midnight.

44. Why all the Al Gore rumours recently?
A few weeks ago there were the anonymous rumours he was having an affair with Larry David's wife.

Now some woman who charges hundreds an hour to massage men for a living claims YEARS after the fact that Gore made "violent" sexual advances to her.

I am very skeptical.

Funny how BP has a massive oil spill and suddenly the rumour mills start pouring out about Gore, who has been so tough on BP.

Right after one of the biggest environmental disasters in who knows how long, does the media start attacking Gore all over the place on his personal life. So when he gets on TV to talk about BP, they ask him if he's screwing Laurie David or making "violent" sexual advances against masseuses who charge hundreds an hour.
