Those Praying For God To Fix The Gulf Better Be Praying For IMMEDIATE Help
If god's going to help, shouldn't he be able to help like this very instant? I mean, he's god after all, right? God doesn't need a plan or a skimmer or a timetable or science or any of the things humans use to fix problems. He's omnipotent and omniscient, so all he has to do is answer the effing prayers of the Palins of the world. He can answer them now - instantaneously - and stop the oil leak in the Gulf. He can do it through an incredible supernatural act that would let the whole world know that man had no hand in the solution.

But most of all, he can do it without wasting another moment, because he is god and he can do anything he wants whenever and wherever he wants.

Oh, wait - god couldn't defeat the Canaanites because they had chariots of iron. If you can't defeat chariots of iron, how ya gonna fix an oil gusher a mile beneath the surface? More than a few humans have been able to defeat chariots of iron. God - not so much.

But maybe if we all pray REAL hard...

1. One would think the omnipotent creator of the universe wouldn't have let it happen in first place
but mysterious ways and all that.

However as long as we're praying, might as well ask that he make the earth suck all the oil back in, clean the beaches, bring back the wildlife restore the fisheries and make CEO's listen to the engineers and technicians instead of the temp from accounting.

2. I'm pretty sure God plays by the Pottery Barn rules.
You break it, you own it. The LA legislature might have spent a little more time reflecting on the worst case scenario's for drilling wells a mile deep in the ocean. Had they done that, they wouldn't have to pray to God now, to bail them out of this mess. Hope they won't be too disappointed when He doesn't answer them...

4. The messages that I'm getting are along that line
When I've meditated on this, the response that I get back is "No. You Humans screwed up what was freely given to you. Don't come to Us for help. Grow up and fix it yourselves."

7. I guess God is really into broad brushing humanity.
God really needs to refresh his critical thinking skills.

8. Pottery Barn only makes the person who actually broke the item pay.

Pottery Barn is much more rational than the God you described in your post.

9. Few of us are without some culpability.
I drive cars, use and buy plastic stuff, eat food made with petroluem based fertilizers, etc. While I've been a big proponent for alternative/renewable energy and I wasn't involved in the decision-making on drilling this disaster, I also know that my oil based consumption/demand (x 100's of millions of other consumers) set the table for this to happen.

10. You and I may have some culpability, but kids have fewer options than adults.
The wildlife being killed has had no realistic way to stop the oil industry.

3. I prayed to Spiderman to use his super web to stop the gusher.
I am pretty sure he put it on his to do list.

12. About prayer...

It seems to be generally accepted when a DU member or those we are connected to in some positive way asks for "prayers, good vibes, well wishes, etc."

When someone has passed or is sick or has a family member in trouble, many post here asking for prayers, good vibes, etc.

I think sending similar good vibes to The Gulf and those affected...heck, to ALL OF US and the Earth Herself...can be a positive thing, not in lieu of practical measures of help, but in addition to. I figure it can't hurt (so long as it doesn't take the place of practical measures).

So I'm generally a proponent of prayer and holding good thoughts, yet I must admit when I hear Palin or Bachmann invoke prayer, my first reaction is to scoff (I get nauseated, actually).

But I realized I'm being a huge hypocrite with that. Maybe thinking in terms of "sending well wishes" -- and not using the word prayer which atheists may find offensive -- that's something everyone can get behind and do, with complete support.

I also recognize that often prayers/well wishes serve to make US feel better...to feel as though we're doing something when we otherwise feel helpless, and can indeed be rather selfish if it takes the place of other potential action...but I figure genuine positive well wishes can't hurt the intended recipient.
