What the fuck is wrong with Conyers?
Edited on Thu May-10-07 10:17 AM by meldroc
Gonzo is testifying, but he is NOT under oath!

WTF?!?!

Why is he letting the GOP dominate the questioning?

Edit: Sorry for implying he got bought, though I don't understand what the strategy is today... Guess since it's a felony to lie to Congress, oath or not, Conyers can nail Gonzo to the wall if he makes any provable lies. (Is there any way to prove that "I don't recall." is a lie?)

1. To demonstrate Alberto's memory improvements when not facing perjury?
That would be my guess.

Gee, if Gonzales can't recall under oath, but does recall when not under oath, that sure as hell makes a statement about what comes out of his mouth ANYTIME he is not under oath ;)

5. Great point, havocmom. Perhaps he doesn't want Gonzo to feel
so pressured; I'll definitely give Conyers the benefit of the doubt.

4. That's my understanding. Gonzo, the proven and documented liar,

3. I always took Conyers to be pretty sharp - assuming we are thinking about the same person
Maybe he has a strategy?

11. Right, the oath is unnecessary
If he lies, he's in contempt, oath or no oath.

18. Just wondering why he chose this route.
I know it is a crime if you lie before Congress on the Record.
Oath or no oath, however the legal maneuvering defending between lying
under oath vs lying before Congress takes a different legal path.

My question is: was this agreed upon before hand
between Gonzales and the committee?

16. Thanks for the info
regarding WHY GONZO DOESN'T HAVE TO BE UNDER OATH. (Sorry, capped it for those that just skim a thread before replying to OP).

21. I know, people keep forgetting this! All an oath is is just a quaint tradition...
and a photo op for the people doing the questioning/answering.

8. Conyers knows he will get absolutely nothing from Gonzo
if Gonzo is under oath. He can always swear Gonzo in and contrast the statements.

13. "How much did he get bought for?"
Kind of a draconian accusation, don't you think? Perhaps this is an informational pre-hearing, leading to something else? Sometimes it's best to think about something before reacting.

15. Given how nasty the politics have been in the Beltway,
Edited on Thu May-10-07 10:04 AM by meldroc
I'd be surprised to see Conyers on the take, but as a citizen, I've been betrayed so many times by politicians inside the Beltway I hold nothing to be impossible anymore.

Though I am a bit reassured hearing the law making it a felony to lie to Congress, whether you're under oath or not.

Yes, DC politics makes me really, really cynical. Call it a survival strategy.

19. You mess w Conyers...
you have to go through me. After the '04 election theft, when so many Dems turned their backs on Ohio, it was Rep John Conyers who listened to our pleas, and even came ot Ohio to hold public hearings. He is a long standing champion of social justice and has more integrity than just about any elected leader. Your "getting bought out" is a poorly informed cheap shot on a undeserving gentleman.

24. OK, I'm sorry.
I'll give Conyers the benefit of the doubt - he has a history of doing the right thing, all the way back to Watergate.

I'll admit that seeing how things in the Beltway have been going for the past six years has made me very, very, very cynical.

20. If he lies to Congress, he's breaking the law
Adding an oath to it means the little weasel goes to hell on top of breaking the law.

Of course, all those "I can't remember" statements under oath will already do the job.

22. You either whip these Demos in line or you will have a Repug
Congress and President for the next eight years.

They have not nailed one Repug and most likely won't. All smoke and no fire!

Put it all on the table! Frog march!
