Events NOT going well in Afghanistan- but no one is paying attention
US Strike Kills Civilians in Khost,
Bombings Rock Helmand Capital
UN: Roadside Bombings Double

Posted on June 20, 2010 by Juan Cole

Things are not going well for the Obama administration in Afghanistan, and the only good news for the White House is that almost no one in the United States seems to be paying attention.

Supposedly precision strikes by the US air force against the militant Haqqani Network in Khost province in the south of the country appear to have gone awry and killed 10 civilians. Errant fighter-jet and drone strikes that kill civilians is the number one complaint of Afghans against the growing US military presence, and this incident will further fan the flames of that fuel.

The USG Open Source Center translated an article about the innocent civilians being mistakenly bombarded, which appeared in the Afghan Islamic Press in Pashto on Saturday June 19. It claims not 10 dead but 20.

5. Wait 'til the apologists for the lost war arrive and tell us it's really going well.
And, that the killing is for the Afghan's own good.

3. Biden advised against ramping up - why didn't O take his advice?
Rhetorical, but I can't help it. Frustrating.

I can appreciate the pressure this exerts.

4. "Mistakenly bombed"????
This happened much too frequently in Iraq, Afghanistan and now in Pakistan to be a "mistake".
Murdering civilians is "normal" now.

10. Kinda like being "mistakenly" raped. And, the Afghans should just lie back and enjoy it.

6. Many are very aware and continue to do things everday
One thing is to email your Senators and Reps and the STate Dept each and every time civilians are bombed and if you can include the names or pictures of those harmed.

There are many who aren't paying attention but many of us are and it doesn't help to ignore what we ARE doing. From writing letters to the editor, sending out emails to friends and family, informing people at work how many soldiers died today, or the fact we bombed another wedding party, protesting outside a Senator's office, protesting and getting arrested inside a Senators office, marching in another march, wearing a t-shirt in the mall that says End the War Bring the troops home now. Setting up educational events in our churches, or tea or coffee shops.. etc.

We have and continue to oppose this war and occupation.
