Lincoln's Backers And The White House Flushed $12 Million Down Toilet: Progressive Group
First Posted: 06-17-10 11:06 AM | Updated: 06-17-10 11:13 AM

A new poll showing Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark) in deep general election trouble has compelled a progressive group that opposed her nomination in the Democratic primary to restart their feud with the White House over her candidacy.

On Thursday, a new Rasmussen poll shows Rep. John Boozman (R-Ark.) beating Lincoln by a margin of 61 percent to 32 percent. Rasmussen is notably viewed with skepticism by progressive organizations. But the group Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which poured heavy manpower and resources into electing Lt. Gov Bill Halter in the Democratic primary, jumped on the findings as evidence that Lincoln is as good as dead, electorally.

Noting that the last time a poll was conducted for a prospective general election in Arkansas, Halter trailed Boozman by 9 points (Lincoln trailed by 20), the group's co-founder Adam Green offered a sharp swipe at the administration.

The White House, Bill Clinton, and the big corporations they partnered with just flushed $12 million down the toilet. They worked to defeat the more electable Democrat in the primary -- not to mention the Democrat who would have had Obama's back on key votes. Rahm Emanuel will go down in history as having some of the worst political instincts of all time -- advising Obama to back Specter over Sestak, taunting progressives for backing the more electable candidate in Arkansas, killing the public option that had overwhelming public support, and working to water down Wall Street reform. Brilliance.

3. Hows the saying go??.....
given the choice between a real Republican and a fake Republican the people will choose the latter - go figure.

I hope the Dems are realizing that corporatists will be purged from the party sooner or later, the voters are pulling their collective heads out of the sand - thank goodness

5. The latter? They'll choose the fake Republican?
Personally, I find "purge" to reek of totalitarianism and death sentences to those who don't toe the party line. Primary challenges are a perfectly reasonable tool of democratic government and I hope we will continue to use them.

Your zest for "purging" is inconsistent with democratic government.

7. Dont think of it as a purge
Think of it as sending the conservatives back home to the GOP where they belong.

A political realignment is a more appropriate term.

13. Your right, the former is what I meant to say..
and I didn't intend to use purge in a non-democratic fashion. Of course, I want ALL DINOs/Corporatists challenged and beat'n at the ballot box.

I thought a trend had started here in PA with the "purging" of Specter, although Sestak is nowhere near the Lib/progressive we may want. It is a start and Lincoln is just another example of what the Democratic party needs NOT to be..

12. Great piece.
Not defeating Lincoln is the biggest mistake the Democratic Party has made in years. Arkansas voters deserve the lower paying jobs and climate change disasters they'll get as a result of Lincoln's whoring to corporate CEO's.

16. This piece is very misleading. Rasmussen last had Halter down 60 to 33.
If you are going to cite a Rasmussen poll showing how badly Lincoln is doing, you should also site the Rasmussen poll that shows that Halter is basically doing just as badly. If you don't like Rasmussen, you shouldn't cite either of their polls. Citing one Rasmussen poll and comparing it to a non-Rasmussen poll is quite misleading for the author to do.

The truth is both sides wasted their money, because neither has or had a prayer of winning the seat.
