"During the Samurai days, we just give you a knife and ask you to commit harakiri."
Joseph Cao to BP CEO: 'During the Samurai days, we just give you a knife and ask you to commit harakiri.'

From our GOOD friends at crooksandliars.com

I'm thinking Joe Cao is capable of dispatching this weasel himself.

The heat is on, and I think the country is in the mood to stomp the guts out these swine.

2. Republican scum Joe Cao on drilling moratorium
"Louisiana Rep. Joseph Cao (R) expresses his concern in a hearing Wednesday that imposing a six month moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico may have “unintended consequences.” Cao states that Louisiana is highly dependent on the oil industry, and that the drilling ban could cost the state 40,000 jobs."

14. That seems like a legitimate complaint about how it's going to impact
his individual constituents that elected him to go to DC and represent them - sure as hell different from the typical GOP statements today about "slush fund" or "Chicago style shakedown"

3. Cao cares
Edited on Wed Jun-16-10 10:41 PM by Mimosa
He's not 'scum'.

It's desperation. Most Vietnamese -and there are many many thousands in South Louisiana- *were* employed in the fishing/shrimping business.

Uzybone, what would you propose they do for jobs since fishing is DEAD? Who's going to help them? Self-employed people can't collect unemployment benefits.

5. So you want fishermen to join the oil industry
I don't get your point.

And you are right...Cao isn't scum. He is just a republican.

9. Well, he is Vietnamese and American
so expecting him to be expert in Japanese terminology may be a bit much.

The idea is sound: people who f up on a grand enough scale ought to at least have the decency to spare the rest of us the trouble.

10. Actually, both terms are correct
Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 03:55 AM by Art_from_Ark
They are synonyms, like twelve and a dozen

If the Chinese characters are followed by the okurigana り, then the word is pronounced "harakiri"
If not, then the general pronunciation is "seppuku"

13. Whoops, forgot to mention
The order of the characters is also reversed
Harakiri-- stomach, cut
Seppuku-- cut, stomach

Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 04:13 AM by AsahinaKimi
That only those Samurai (which means to serve) who seek an honorable resolution would use Seppuku in the strictest sense of Japanese Tradition. One has to have honor in the first place when they lose it. The code of Bushido requires it so they may right the wrong!

16. That is an interesting correlation to the Jewish/Christian belief that without the shedding of blood
there is no propitiation of sin. Of course that kind of similarity drives the xtians I know nuts.

17. Did Rep. Cao quote The Operative from "Serenity"?
Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 10:08 PM by AnnieBW
The Operative: You know, in certain older civilized cultures, when men failed as entirely as you have, they would throw themselves on their swords.
Dr. Mathias: Well, unfortunately, I forgot to bring a sword.
(The Operative unsheathes his sword)
