68. my thoughts exactly.
And yet, time and again, we have refused to settle for the paltry limits of conventional wisdom. Instead, what has defined us as a nation since our founding is our capacity to shape our destiny - our determination to fight for the America we want for our children. Even if we're unsure exactly what that looks like. Even if we don't yet know precisely how to get there. We know we'll get there.

It is a faith in the future that sustains us as a people. It is that same faith that sustains our neighbors in the Gulf right now.

Each year, at the beginning of shrimping season, the region's fishermen take part in a tradition that was brought to America long ago by fishing immigrants from Europe. It's called "The Blessing of the Fleet," and today it's a celebration where clergy from different religions gather to say a prayer for the safety and success of the men and women who will soon head out to sea - some for weeks at a time.

The ceremony goes on in good times and in bad. It took place after Katrina, and it took place a few weeks ago - at the beginning of the most difficult season these fishermen have ever faced.

And still, they came and they prayed. For as a priest and former fisherman once said of the tradition, "The blessing is not that God has promised to remove all obstacles and dangers. The blessing is that He is with us always," a blessing that's granted "...even in the midst of the storm."

The oil spill is not the last crisis America will face. This nation has known hard times before and we will surely know them again. What sees us through - what has always seen us through - is our strength, our resilience, and our unyielding faith that something better awaits us if we summon the courage to reach for it. Tonight, we pray for that courage. We pray for the people of the Gulf. And we pray that a hand may guide us through the storm towards a brighter day. Thank you, God Bless You, and may God Bless the United States of America.

Pretty incredible.

...waved his hands, said some magic words, and the leak would have stopped!

Why don't people do that? Everybody knows that all we need is a great speech by somebody, anybody - magic words and waving hands, and the damned leak will stop!!!!!

This is a speech that could be given at any time, really.
All this talk about the future is nice, but I beg, "where is the fierce urgency of now"?
What about the current operational clusterfuck of cleanup efforts?
What about the current unfolding disaster?

very disappointing speech. I'm sure if I lived near the Gulf I'd be alot more than "disappointed".

Us being political junkies.

I think this speech was for people aware of the spill, with strong feelings of frustration about it, but not following the details very much.

A hazy, nonspecific "Do something!" sentiment in the media has been given a hazy, nonspecific response.

The "foxes have been guarding the henhouse" for at least thirty years. Remember the S&L debacle, Wall Street ponzi guys, Enron fleecers and many more. We get bilked and we pay--they don't pay, WE PAY!!! It's getting kind of insulting. It's time for the people in this country to demand real regulations, not the fluff our congresscritters try to appease us with, while winking at their corporate greed buds. And those corporate owned, clueless, deregulating teabaggers can kiss my arse!

I noticed that after his long Praise Jaysus section of the speech there at the end. He had me until he did that. I mean, if he's gonna pray, the least he could do is say Hallelujah or Amen at the end. Otherwise, it just don't feel right. I guess he was nervous or something.

I'm gonna get ripped a new one for this, but it's a pet peeve of mine.

in the next couple of weeks. So far they aren't even close to 90 %. Assuming 35,000- 60,000 barrels leaking a day, and BP capturing 15,000 barrels, BP might be getting ~ 25-43 %. So how are they going to get 90 %?

40. This is sort of frivolous but whose camera is that?
They had it so he had to look up instead of down.

Is that Brian Lamb's camera?

and agree with most of what Olberman and the commentators are saying, unfortunately.

67. I didn't see it, so how could I have been disappointed?
I worked, and by the time I got off, the Dodgers and Lakers were on.

He's still the greatest man who's ever lived, not to mention the Greatest President this country has ever known; he's cool, he's dapper, and he's already given the greatest speeches ever recorded for posterity.

What's one more speech?

We're lucky to have him, he's better than McKamikaze/Failin', things could be worse, and my goodness, aren't Michelle and the kids to die for?

The pony is in the mail; I heard it on the grapevine.

Hint: Never, NEVER, name your pony "Specific Steps".

It'll all be good... someday.

I am so disgusted! :puke:

There was NOTHING about any plans for energy independence from oil!

No, instead we get a gawd damn ridiculous sermon!!!

Does Obama REALLY think that a b.s. prayer is gonna make anyone feel better as the gulf and all it's wildlife DIES?

And is he really pushing that the oil gusher was all gawds "plan"?!!!!

Sorry, but I'm not buying that crap!!! :puke:

79. I don't need to hear anymore speeches.
When he starts firing the Republicans and especially the Bush II holdovers in his administration then I'll believe change is coming.

As far as the oil spill goes I want him to tell BP to start drilling at least 3 more relief wells right now. He's setting himself up for failure by relying on BP to be successful on the first 2 tries. What have they done right so far that makes him believe that BP will get anything right on the first try.
