Thanks for the new thread. I just posted this link at the old one, has tons of links to BP & Halliburton papers, congressional hearings, lots of info from many sources.

13. With regard to the 48-hour deadline for BP to come up with a plan... OR ELSE.
Lots of "or else what" speculation going around. I found this response at TOD interesting:

"syncro on June 14, 2010 - 2:13am I think obama clearly sees that, too. That's why he spoke up about their $10 billion dividend and is insisting they set up a fund about twice as big as that dividend.

And while BP may be too busy to bother with obama, they are not too busy to bother about their stock price. And he has quite a week laid out for them that could send their stock into a tailspin again if BP comes out of it badly.

There's the 48 hour deadline on Mon. The presidential address to the nation on tues. The presidential meeting with the COB of BP and the congressional hearing including BP witnesses on Thurs. Boehner has also come out in favor of lifting the $75 million cap to unlimited damages. That xould pass this week too.

BP is going to be the focus of the world for the next week. I don't think they're going to want to be found unable to meet govt. deadlines for clean-up ioperation on top of it. The market will lose more confidence in their ability to effectively deal with the mess."

From a reply in the TOD link by jaxx...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7CX9SXEI8I

Of course I hope the narrator watching this ROV feed is wrong.

I have no idea what's coming out of the seabed here.

We don't know where these ROVs are when filming.

And, didn't BP place mats all around the BOP?

I've seen diagrams of these, but never noticed them in any feeds or stills.

20. Just sediment blowing around due to thrusters, etc.?
I'm good with that, also was unfamiliar with sea bottom make-up; hard rock vs thick sediment.

<-> oilfield brat on June 13, 2010 - 3:58pm Permalink | Subthread | Parent | Parent subthread | Comments top

I posted this in a thread above, but it is pertinent here:

If you watch closely in the beginning of the top video on Higgin's site, and focus on the debris being moved by small currents, the apparent leaks sprout just as an eddy of current hits them. Subsequent things that look like leaks shoot up just after the ROV changes position with its thrusters, especially noticeable in the big clouds at about 00:29, just after the ROV shifted to the left. These clouds are completely consistent with silt being blown around by the thrusters. No evidence here of a subsurface oil leak.
Comments can no longer be added to this story.

"...the apparent leaks sprout just as an eddy of current hits them."

That is not apparent to me and, if it were the case, would not prove, or even suggest, that the activity visible is *not* leakage, from somewhere/something.

"Subsequent things that look like leaks... are completely consistent with silt being blown around by the thrusters."

That appears to be correct.

"No evidence here of a subsurface oil leak."

The evidence doesn't support that conclusion, or any other conclusion. Rather, it suggests further careful observation.

29. Lots of activity today:
Last night and today the Skandi Herc 14 ROV dropped dispersant wand duties for the most part and did some work near/on the kill lines near the BOP.

This afternoon it was working on methanol lines before returning to dispersant wand duty:

This mystery piece of equipment was lowered overnight:

One ROV has been watching these gauges on the cap all day:

It may be a pressure meter. The gov't required BP to install sensors to help measure the flow and this may be related.

This manifold is in the process of being relocated:

First the ROV picked these up and put them on its "dashboard":

The ROV version of a bobblehead:

Then the manifold was connected and is currently being lifted.

Miscellaneous:

View of the plume backlit. The yellow at the top is the ROV.

A view of the area around the cap.

a play-by-play commentary going on at all times.

I'm getting antsy to 'move ahead' - although if we are truly capturing more oil daily, that's good news.

I wonder if they will keep attempting "let's try this" types of action until they get the relief wells ready to go.

39. Q4000 system coming online today maybe?
From the most current TOD thread:

"anon3803 on June 15, 2010 - 1:15am I was looking at the video feeds that BP has and noticed the containment update that went with it. It currently says: "Subsea operations for the long term containment option continue to progress; one of the air cans was deployed today." I'm just curious what "air cans" they're referring to. Is this part of the next containment system? Also does anyone know when the Q4000 system is supposed to come online? We seem to get so many fewer status updates now that Thad Allen is giving them instead of Mr. Suttles...

rainyday on June 15, 2010 - 2:12am Also does anyone know when the Q4000 system is supposed to come online?

Suttles' 6/13 letter in response to Watson's 6/12 letter demanding accelerated deployment of containment capacity gives 6/15 as the target date for full ramp up of the Q4000. Given how busy the ROVs have been this evening installing connections and moving manifolds, that seems optimistic.

I imagine BP would like to be able to report progress when they meet with Obama on Wednesday.

The air can is part of one of the floating riser systems they'll employ as part of the permanent containment systems. Take a look at Kent Wells 6/12 Technical Briefing . Some of the details have already changed, but it is a good overview and contains a photo of one of the two air cans."

43. The "air can" is the float to hold the "long term containment" riser pipe.
The cap will be connected to a riser which will rise to about 300 ft below the waterline. The aircan will be partially submerged to keep riser in place 300ft below surface. Tankers will connect to that riser will flexible hoses.

This will allow quick connect & disconnect in the event of hurricanes. Since the can will float (and hold the riser in place) about 300ft below the surface so it should be minimally affected by hurricanes.

47. *** Fire halts oil collection ***
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 02:27 PM by gateley
UPDATE 2:50 p.m. ET: BP has issued a statement:
At approximately 9:30 am CDT, a small fire was observed at the top of the derrick on the Discoverer Enterprise. The fire was quickly extinguished. The preliminary view is that the fire was caused by a lightning strike.

There were no injuries. All procedures were followed and, as a precaution, the LMRP containment operation was shut-down. All safety shut-down systems operated as designed.

Final safety and operational assurance inspections are underway and operations are expected to recommence this afternoon.

UPDATE 2:39 p.m. ET: BP says the small fire started about 10:30 a.m. ET and was quickly contained. No one was injured, and collection of oil is expected to resume this afternoon, the company says.

UPDATE 2:36 p.m. ET: The Associated Press follows with an alert saying the fire was caused by a lightning strike.
_____
Bulletin from Reuters: "BP says small fire at top of derrick on Discover Enterprise caused temporary shutdown of oil spill collection."
We're trying to find out more and will post an update as soon as we can. Read more about the Discover Enterprise here.

EDIT: Appears to be okay. Small fire, caused by lightning? Sounds as though shutting down the action was just following the safety procedures. Hope all is well!

EDIT #2 - UPDATE 3:18 p.m. ET: A spokesman for BP now says the company has no estimate on when the containment system will restart. It originally had said the process would resume this afternoon.

51. Very fortunate..
Being surrounded by oily waters, I'm glad that it was only a minor incident and was quickly under control.

Not minor to the hands I'll bet. :P

Saw a pic of it earlier today and the idea of burning off the oil is amazing.

52. Today's roundup of activity:
I left off at the manifold being moved. It was placed in its new location.

Connectors were cleaned:

and then it was all reconnected:

Skandi Herc 6 was on Methanol line Lance ops. I have no idea what a lance op is and I watched it the entire time.

Then something was lowered to the seabed:

It appears to be an empty box. Those are the most exciting pictures of it. LOL Have no idea what it is for.

Today:

Q4000's ROVs jumped into action:

It looked like the ROV was connecting something to the "Star Wars stormtrooper helmet" device.

And more action at a manifold:

Connecting, disconnecting, and knob turning.

Sibling ROV watching the ROV at the manifold controls.

There are lots of manifold pictures at the Life After the Oil Crash forum linked at the top of this thread.

Come into the light Carol Ann:

Ocean Intervention III deckhand thanks you for your time.

56. Great recap - any word on whether they are back recovering oil after the lightning strike?
I went to bed last night (early this AM) and was happy that most of the cap was visible. Then when I got up this morning, there were big, billowing clouds of oil again. The news guys said that the rig collecting the oil was struck by lightning and had a fire so they had to stop collecting.

I guess the storm trooper helmet is the new cap?

66. Well he was washing the ROV prior to that....
His face was on camera, but I didn't cap that.

I do know someone on one of the ships, but I need to check again and find out which one. I don't think he is one on of the main ships however.

So I always pay extra attention to the hands when the ROVs go topside. Doubtful I'll get to see him, but you never know...

Reading over the article, it sounds like it was written by someone lacking some of the expertise and knowledge that others here and on the TOD threads have.

I know TOD doesn't necessarily agree with him (or was that just his claim that there were other gushers elsewhere?) - do you know if there is an actual way to determine if this is or isn't accurate?

69. Q4000 is online update...

Greetings from the Q4000

I'm guessing this is part of the ROV workstation.

The Q4000 and evergreen burner in action.

Not much else was going on:

More gauge reading although that has stopped for now:

More Methanol ops and spewing green gas:

It looks like something out of the 60s Batman TV show.

More manifold fun (split view):

First it was valve testing last night and today two ROVs were hooking up a manifold to presumably a crane. As far as I know, the manifold is still there. The picture above is two ROVs looking at each other.

What looks like debris. Maybe related to the sunken rig:

There were other pieces of debris scattered about as this ROV followed a cable. Unfortunately the Q4000 ROVs have a lousy picture quality.

I don't know what the ROV was doing here:

I think these are weights to the yellow floaties/sensors on a string down there:

It's been really slow lately. The only action right now is dispersant ops.

Have a good night all:

80. The new larger cap in July is supposed to have a much larger capacity
Wasn't the total amount they claim the final arrangement can do around 60,000 bpd? Also, the Q4000 can do another 7,000 bpd I think, which would bring the interim qty. to about 25,000 bpd.

85. Not much going on right now...
A new dispersant wand was installed:

http://tinyurl.com/23av7m9

On the Skandi Neptune ship, in the water, installed, and working. The last picture shows it accumulating oil gunk after a few hours of use. I can't see those holes remaining unclogged for long.

And something (scrap riser?) is being removed:

Lousy resolution of it being lifted.

And putting it in a box:

Fish!! There is a whole school of them at the upper part of the riser:

Unfortunately the schooling pictures just look like white dots.

And I spotted this one near the BOP:

Part of the Boa Deep C deck:

ROV being prepped for manifold work:

The manifold work is something we've all seen before.

Here's a box above the cap:

And currently there is work being done on the cap:

All of the oil is being blown away below.

It looks like they may be closing another valve.

And a slew of documents from the Congressional Committee investigation: http://tinyurl.com/2fm3vng
