Had to take daughter to ER yesterday
My 9 year old daughter has a history of migraines. Yesterday she was playing when out of the blue she started screaming that her head was hurting. I phoned her doctor who advised me to take her to the emergency room and have them contact him so he would know what treatment she received. Our hospital recently changed ownership but that didn't even enter my mind, my daughter was in pain! thankfully there were very few people in the waiting area and they were able to take her directly in. But once we were back in the treatment area, they asked what type of insurance we had. I provided them with the information and they verified coverage. I mentioned to the nurse that it seemed a little insensitive in an ER situation and she told me that verification of insurance is used to determine the level of service you receive. Migraine and no insurance = tylenol and a cold compress; Good insurance = mri, codeine, IV fluids AND they will lower the lights!

1. I hope she is well today.

Re coverage: Ambulance crews usually even try to determine a patient's ability to
pay so that they know what facility to take a patient to. A sad commentary indeed.

3. I'm not sure who is better served there.
I certainly hope that MRI was ordered by a neurologist and not an ER doc.

In any case, I very much hope that your daughter has recovered.

4. Actually it was her oncologist who ordered it.
She was diagnosed with Acute lymphocytic leukemia two years ago and is currently in remission.

6. That makes more sense. A growing body of research in medicine right now...
...is to track the total amounts of radiation people receive getting various scans. People's cumulative radiation exposure is not something doctors tend to consider when ordering scans and it shows. The amounts of radiation some patients are being exposed to is stunning. That's not so much a concern with MRI's of course, but no test is without some risk.

I'm so glad to hear that your daughter's ALL is in remission. My father has CLL, also currently in remission, so I certainly know how scary any new symptom can be. And, oddly enough, my husband researches ALL.

5. I hope she is okay too! I went to ER once while bleeding profusely, but had to fill out a form first
I went to the emergency room a few days after an operation on my nose. But in the middle of the night something ruptured and blood poured out my nose and down my throat. Nothing would stop the bleeding. But when I got the the ER the person said I had to fill out a couple of forms to be seen. I had to sit down with a clipboard with blood pouring all over it and filled out the form. When I gave them the form back it was almost completely soaked with blood. I left a trail of blood all across the floor where I walked. Oh yeah, and I had insurance.

And right wingers keep lying saying everyone already has medical care because all they have to do is go to an emergency room.

I'm glad your daughter is okay and sorry you had to experience such coldness.
