Africa Opens First High Speed Rail Service- USA where the Fuck are you?
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 02:21 AM by Ichingcarpenter
JOHANNESBURG (AFP) South Africa will open the continent's first high-speed rail link on Tuesday, just in time to whisk a mass influx of World Cup fans Cup from the country's main airport into uptown Johannesburg.

The three billion dollar Gautrain project has been dogged by a series of problems since work began in September 2006, including strikes and excavation snags, and only one stretch of the line will open for business this week.

A taxi ride from the airport into Johannesburg can take an hour but as of Tuesday, arrivals will be able to make the same journey in less than 15 minutes as the train hurtles along at speed of up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) an hour.

The first terminus to open is at Sandton, a swanky suburb which is home to the Johannesburg stock exchange and a massive shopping mall But the train will eventually take passengers into the central business district, the suburb of Rosebank and onto Pretoria, the seat of government.

The highway between Pretoria to Johannesburg is much the busiest in the country and the journey can be a two-hour commute at rush-hour but the same trip on the Gautrain should take just 42 minutes.

1. Our first Wall Street President gave the top economic postitions to Wall Street
Insiders.

So over twelve trillion (not billions, but trillions) of bucks went to the coffers of the Big Wall Street Financial Firms. They are busy using that money to bet against the currencies and economies of Portugal, Iceland, Greece, et al.

So none of the money that could have been used for High Speed rail is out there in sufficient amounts to get High Speed rail up and working.

And of course, a huge decision like that is one about which Big Oil interests are determining most of the policy (behind closed doors, of course.) And Big Oil doesn't necessarily want to have us using High Speed rail.

and keeping the very illegal one in Iraq going. Gotta get that Caspian sea pipeline going, gotta get that black gold to India! Trillion dollar wars for billion dollar pipelines to India are soooo affordable, along with hundreds of bailouts for secretive banksters, but a high speed Mag Lev National rail system, now that'll break the budget, don't you know!

21. We need that oil pipeline now more than ever.
Eighty percent of BP's oil in the Gulf went to our military.

So we have to keep fighting for oil so that we can keep fighting for oil!!

I am enjoying the image of a Mag Lev National rail system. If it existed, just think how fast we could send some of our "worser" Congress critters back to their home districts for good.

3. Haven't you heard? It's not the government's responsibility?
Only when people Demand and are ready to fork out the money as a direct tax deduction can we do these things. It's not government's job.

I heard that right here on DU. It's all over the place in GD P.

4. No faster than the Acela
Although much needed, the drive from the airport is awful and being stuck in traffic your a sitting duck for the jerkoffs who will toss a brick through your window and grab whatever they can.

6. Where is America? Becoming a 3rd world country that's where.
We choose to spend money invading and occupying other countries meanwhile things are going to hell here at home!! Not to mention the incredible stress on our military doing 5-6 etc tours in hell.

7. Not invented here, so don't need it.
We're the leader.
If we didn't invent it and if we aren't the first or can't buy the business and then claim we invented it, then we don't need it.
If we can buy the business and put it out of business, then that is good also.
Remember we are the world's best.

17. Who'd want to be cooped up on a train for an hour?
Especially when you can fly a hundred miles in less time than that. Although you have to get to the airport three hours early, check in, go through an insulting security screening that doesn't really make you any safer, wait around for a couple more hours, get packed onto a plane where you are discouraged from leaving your seat, and when you reach your destination, wait another hour to get your stuff (which they thoughtfully packed/lost for a nominal extra fee), then take a taxi or other ground transportation to your ultimate destination because airports are built hell-and-gone from anyplace you'd actually want to go (for, admittedly, good reason). But the actual time spent in transit is shorter by plane!

18. The New Denver International Airport is out in the Prairie
Many miles outside of Denver.... Plenty of Land.... empty.... and the couldn't even
build a HSR out there.... Many were pissed.

A Taxi costs a fortune and the Bus takes over an hour., whereas a car takes 20mins or less
HSR?,,,,,,, maybe in 8 years

It was in the plan but Denver voted for the Baseball field instead...... go figure.
