5. Boy, the US must look really shitty compared to those days

I remember people saying back during Viêtnam that they had optimism, a feeling that we could change it for the better. They said they were gonna stop the military-industrial complex. Today, that kind of optimism about the future is gone, but the complex is still there and still very strong if not stronger.

11. I felt the future would be good.

I was confident I could let my heroes bring in a new world and I could make poetry and insightful conversation in coffee houses. I had no thought they would slay my heroes and that I had to go out on the streets myself and that those old smoky existentialist coffee houses would be shut down for the rest of time. And all those conversations with them.
