My New Purple Shirt

It has a colorful graphic on the front touting this year's Relay For Life; on the back, in big white letters, "SURVIVOR".

Our local event had over 5,000 participants and raised well over $300,000. Businesses, entertainers, organizations, clubs and groups of neighbors put their time and considerable energies to the effort. Citizens of every political stripe walked, ran, square danced, garage-saled, bake-saled, made and sold craft items and held a candlelight vigil. To all of them - THANK YOU!

I treasure my new purple shirt, and not just because it celebrates that I'm still alive. It's also precious because it symbolizes what can be accomplished when we overcome our differences and work together to achieve a common good. We can still do it. Yes, we can.
