Managers of a renowned bird sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico say they have found their first dead pelican in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Breton National Wildlife Refuge, about eight miles from the Louisiana coast, had been fortunate so far in avoiding the worst of the Gulf oil spill.

But on Thursday morning, workers found a young brown pelican on a sand spit with its neck and one wing matted in oil.

Refuge biologist James Harris said the pelican was likely killed by the oil.

An estimated 4,500 pelicans and tens of thousands of terns nest on the dozens of islands that make up the sanctuary.

Harris said with each passing day the refuge is "pushing the envelope" in avoiding disaster.

1. That's not from the oil spill, that pelican obviously committed suicide by jumping in old oil
It's not even crude oil, it's actually used oil from KFC that just got really dark. BP hasn't done anything wrong here.

5. Dammit!! I was planning on replying with the first Limbaugh reference!
My comment was going to be along the lines of him lighting another cigar, and laughing like Dr. Evil over the sight of the dead pelican...I'm sure I'm not far off at all.

8. Wait until the cancer clusters start appearing on the coastline
from the dispersants.
Of course, that will be explained away...

12. it is the very worst time of year this could happen
Edited on Thu May-20-10 09:02 PM by pitohui
a friend asked me what abt the pelicans on st. john's bayou (in new orleans) etc. i had to explain that all pelicans go offshore this time of year w. their families to breed

we walked all about new orleans today but saw none, there were no young pelicans held back in reserve in the city where they're safe, they're ALL presumably offshore out there with their families

very sad
