if you go trotting far enough to the left you will eventually run into the people from the right heading the other way around the circle.

Leftwing and rightwing are relative to the center and relative to your worldview, and these days the center aren't centrist so much as undecided.

There are some serious nutbags right here on DU who claim to be real progressives and yet believe the nanny state is entirely appropriate, who believe in splitting up families into fosterage for slapping a kid on the face or a swat on the butt, who believe in punishment without rehabilitation, who believe that community service is not institutionalized free city labor nor a substitute for financial restitution, and who believe that the mythical "the rich" (as if it were a discrete entity with goals and motives different from the entity "the poor") are responsible for all the evil in the world. It goes on and on . . . we can be as whackadoodle obsessive as the next semantically challenged teabagger, but I think our hearts are generally in a better place.

Oh we have our own special cases we like to keep locked up when civil company comes calling, no doubt.
