they came to iowa recently, same thing happened:
lots of signs, and coffee and donuts.

about 500 people came out to show support for same sex marriage, and
being iowa people were real nice to the 6 or 7 (3 were pre teen kids) WBC, crowding around, engaging in conversation

completely backfiring what i guess is their
strategy of hate mongering. a lot of pictures and video were taken, and a lot of sincere questions were directed to the WBC;

more like pity than a counter protest. someone learned it was one of the WBC kids birthday and word spread through the crowd, igniting a chorus of "happy birthday" to the kid. he was visibly stunned. they had planned two other 'events" in the area that day but after this turnout they packed it up and headed home, completely neutered.

Our church's annual conference, and to the surprise of our reactionary members, we were getting picketed by these nitwits. We pulled the same sort of thing. On the theory that bigotry is thirsty work, and it being a hot summer afternoon, we bought a bunch of cold drinks from the street vendors around the convention center and offered the drinks to them. The Westboro people know how to cope with hate, anger, yelling and frustration, being intimately familiar with those things; they don't know how to cope with kindness. It cut their demonstration short, and they didn't come back.
