Facebook being hit by some sort of virus/worm.. don't friend anyone for a while..
I was hit..

I started hearing from friends that I was sending them suggestions for friends which I never sent and I saw the same from my own friends.

I finally put two and two together tonight when I looked at my suggested friends from FB and realized that out of 60 names every last one was female. The odds against that are astronomical.

I changed my PW and reported to FB hopefully they figure it out.

1. I have received a bunch of odd friend requests lately
I never accept them unless I know them.

10. I've been getting weird phone calls too
Edited on Fri May-14-10 11:57 PM by proud2BlibKansan
I called the number back yesterday and some guy apologized and said a computer had been misdialing my number. He said something about online surveys and I said I hadn't done any of those. So he asked I wanted to take a survey and I said no and then he asked if I was single.

I hung up.

2. I received a request
and I went to check their friends and 1. they were all women; 2. they all had the same first name and a different last name. I keelhauled him (I use Pirate English on my Facebook).

3. Well these were all real people who had a lot of friends in common with me
and lived mostly in Tampa but the odds against it are still astronomical.

4. I don't believe it is something as simple as a 'worm'...
In fact, it sounds like FB may well be pushing to expand networks for a reason.

If you have a few friends in common, then FB might create a super-echelon of 'friends' in order to encourage networking. From what I've been seeing, FB's figured out how to drive the networking engine into real money.

This would be consistent with that notion, and I've seen the very same thing you have.

6. OK but why send me only female friends? Because I say I'm interested in women?
I'm straight and yes I'm interested in women but I never really looked at FB as a dating site so I think it is very odd to send me only women. It's either a FB bug, a virus, or something very weird is going on.

13. That's not very nice.
OP was just trying to make a public service announcement.

17. You have a point. And no it wasn't nice. But...
You really shouldn't be making any sort of "public service announcement" unless you know what you're talking about. Which the OP doesn't. That's ok, there are tons of things I don't know the first thing about, but he should probably be seeking advice from someone more knowledgeable rather than announcing that Facebook has a worm and further advising people not to accept new friends because of his mistaken conclusion. That's just bad form.

19. As an IT manager I get emails of this sort every day from
people who want to be helpful. All of the false alerts are worded virtually the same and you know they are wrong before you even check them out. It's very frustrating and sometimes it causes folks in the business to be sarcastic. It a career hazard.:argh:

14. I still maintain the email address for my late father
who passed away 10 years ago. He obviously never had a Facebook account (nor do I), but his account has received a couple of friend requests each day this week -- from total strangers.

Something is definitely wrong with Facebook!
