Steve King (R-IA): "Homosexual activist lobby" is "taking it out on the rest of society"

Rep Steve King (R-Iowa) told Family Research Council's Tony Perkins that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act would allow gays to harass employers.

The Republican congressman argued that the Act is not necessary if gays and transvestites would just appear straight.

At the Iowa Independent, Jason Hancock notes, King "told a story about his days in the Iowa Senate, when gay activists came to lobby a fellow Republican lawmaker, state Sen. Jerry Behn of Boone, for protected status for sexual orientation and gender identity."

He said, “Let me ask you a question. Am I heterosexual or homosexual?” And they looked him up and down — and actually they should have known — but they said “We don’t know.” And he said “Exactly my point. If you don’t project it, if you don’t advertise it, how would anyone know to discriminate against you?” And that’s at the basis of this.

If people wear their sexuality on their sleeve, then they want to bring litigation against someone that they would point their finger at and say “you discriminate,” it is an entrapment that is legalized by the ENDA Act, it appears to, and its a violation of the individual rights of employers to, at their own discretion, decide who they want to hire and who they want to fire. We don’t need more federal mandates. And we surely don’t need a political statement, and that’s what this is, too. This is the homosexual activist lobby taking it out on the rest of society. They are demanding affirmation for their lifestyle. That’s at the bottom of this.

12. If YOU were Mrs. King, would YOU volunteer for that duty???

No, I thought not. Me neither.

I wonder if there is a Mrs. King.
I hope not, for her sake. Poor thing.

15. No, it makes me think he doesn't want any action from Mrs. King.
But if he can step up and do his procreation duty like a man, then why can't everybody else?

6. I honestly expected him to make a "shoving it down our throats" comment.
King's type is so transparent, even if you're not a Freudian!

8. Is there a "Bat shit crazy activist lobby"?
This Iowan must once again say too the rest of the world: Sorry. He's not representitive of the vast majority of Iowans. Except for the western reaches of the state (King's district) we are mostly sane and sensible.

King is insane- I look for him to be the next anti gay blowhard traveling with a rentboy.com companion if Dobson or Fred Phelps don't beat him to it. Outrageous statements like this play well with the nutters up there. If he isn't ranting on the gay he is ranting on IRS or immigrants etc etc etc.

10. "If you don’t project it, if you don’t advertise it"
I know! Right?

I mean, come on... if you just keep it there in the closet where it belongs...

if you don't go flaunting around with your significant other, holding hands and touching and all that crazy stuff. Why can't just one of you go to the store, park, music event? That way you wouldn't be all up in our faces.

:sarcasm:

16. Many people right here on DU have said the bit about "not projecting."
More times than I can count people have posted the old "People don't know you are gay if you don't tell them but everyone knows that I am _____."

It's the same argument that King is making here. It's a familiar one for many of us.

17. If everyone would just stay in the closet like myself and
all my fellow anti-rights fanatics do ... Rekers, Foley and Craig ...

Cripes. These SOB's should just STFU ... or light themselves on fire ... yeah, I'd be ok with them lighting themselves on fire for their 'cause'.
