WINSTON-SALEM (MCT) — City officials on Monday asked state legislators to push for a state law that would allow trappers to hunt foxes in an attempt to curb the city's coyote population.
"What we've found is that individuals have been reluctant to come in and trap coyotes because it's illegal to trap foxes in Forsyth County," Mayor Allen Joines said. "We're talking about foxes, but we're really talking about coyotes."
The city asked for the legislation to create a fox-hunting season in Forsyth County in response to complaints from homeowners, businesses and nonprofit organizations — including the Children's Home — about the city's growing coyote population.
City attorney Angela Carmon said that the city is proposing to open fox hunting during the same time that hunters are allowed to trap and kill coyotes — from late November to Feb. 1.
