Winston-Salem wants state help to curb coyote population (NC)
WINSTON-SALEM (MCT) — City officials on Monday asked state legislators to push for a state law that would allow trappers to hunt foxes in an attempt to curb the city's coyote population.

"What we've found is that individuals have been reluctant to come in and trap coyotes because it's illegal to trap foxes in Forsyth County," Mayor Allen Joines said. "We're talking about foxes, but we're really talking about coyotes."

The city asked for the legislation to create a fox-hunting season in Forsyth County in response to complaints from homeowners, businesses and nonprofit organizations — including the Children's Home — about the city's growing coyote population.

City attorney Angela Carmon said that the city is proposing to open fox hunting during the same time that hunters are allowed to trap and kill coyotes — from late November to Feb. 1.

1. Raleigh is getting over run by them lately as well.
How about a temporary trap and release as it pertains to foxes?

2. Introduce wolves
Edited on Tue May-11-10 01:42 PM by Warpy
Killing coyotes just makes them increase breeding so the net effect is more coyotes. The only thing that controls the population is introducing a critter that directly competes with them for food: wolves.

That's something the ranchers out here have a hard time understanding, but it's the reason behind the re introduction of wolves out west.

On edit: the advantage to balancing them with wolves is that wolves are much shier creatures, avoiding human contact when possible. Coyotes are pretty fearless, coming into back yards for their favorite snacks of small household pets.

3. Wolves in Ardmore? Are you fucking nuts?
It's bad enough dealing with traffic on my ride to work.

I don't want to be chased by some damned wolf that thinks I'm a mutant deer.

I don't have time for that shit.

Think before you post.

Please.
