PACIFIC JUNCTION, Iowa -- Mills County Attorney Marci McClellan said Friday that charges may be filed next week against a man suspected of neglecting 27 pit bulls on a rural lot near here.
McClellan said she is waiting for a veterinarian's report on the condition of each of the dogs.
County Sheriff Eugene Goos said a man, believed to be the dogs' owner, contacted the Loess Hills Humane Society inquiring about the animals.
Goos said investigators from his office, along with the humane society, concluded that the animals were suffering from neglect.
The dogs were tethered with heavy chains to an axle buried on the lot. Two of the dogs, sick with pneumonia, were euthanized. The rest are recovering at the shelter but were described by humane society shelter manager Kelly Nutter as emaciated, dehydrated and sickly.
