Puppies? Kittens? Something good?
Too much going on in the world, combined with stuff happening in my personal life, I need something positive (beyond "don't worry"). Anyone?

5. I came across this today and found it uplifting.
Adapted and reprinted in the "Inter-Tribal Times" October 1994.

Each morning upon rising, and each evening before sleeping, give thanks for the life within you and for all life, for the good things the Creator has given you and for the opportunity to grow a little more each day. Consider your thoughts and actions of the past day and seek for the courage and strength to be a better person.

Seek for the things that will benefit others (everyone).

RESPECT.

Respect means "To feel or show honor or esteem for someone or something; to consider the well being of, or to treat someone or something with deference or courtesy". Showing respect is a basic law of life.

Treat every person from the tiniest child to the oldest elder with respect at all times.

Special respect should be given to Elders, Parents, Teachers, and Community Leaders.

No person should be made to feel "put down" by you; avoid hurting other hearts as you would avoid a deadly poison.

Touch nothing that belongs to someone else (especially Sacred Objects) without permission, or an understanding between you.

Respect the privacy of every person, never intrude on a person's quiet moment or personal space.

Never walk between people that are conversing.

Never interrupt people who are conversing.

Speak in a soft voice, especially when you are in the presence of Elders, strangers or others to whom special respect is due.

Do not speak unless invited to do so at gatherings where Elders are present (except to ask what is expected of you, should you be in doubt).

Never speak about others in a negative way, whether they are present or not.

Treat the earth and all of her aspects as your mother. Show deep respect for the mineral world, the plant world, and the animal world.
Do nothing to pollute our Mother, rise up with wisdom to defend her.

Show deep respect for the beliefs and religion of others.

Listen with courtesy to what others say, even if you feel that what they are saying is worthless. Listen with your heart.

Respect the wisdom of the people in council. Once you give an idea to a council meeting it no longer belongs to you. It belongs to the people. Respect demands that you listen intently to the ideas of others in council and that you do not insist that your idea prevail. Indeed you should freely support the ideas of others if they are true and good, even if those ideas ideas are quite different from the ones you have contributed. The clash of ideas brings forth the Spark of Truth.

Once a council has decided something in unity, respect demands that no one speak secretly against what has been decided. If the council has made an error, that error will become apparent to everyone in its own time.

Be truthful at all times, and under all conditions.

Always treat your guests with honor and consideration. Give of your best food, your best blankets, the best part of your house, and your best service to your guests.

The hurt of one is the hurt of all, the honor of one is the honor of all.

Receive strangers and outsiders with a loving heart and as members of the human family.

All the races and tribes in the world are like the different colored flowers of one meadow. All are beautiful. As children of the Creator they must all be respected.

To serve others, to be of some use to family, community, nation, and the world is one of the main purposes for which human beings have been created. Do not fill yourself with your own affairs and forget your most important talks. True happiness comes only to those who dedicate their lives to the service of others.

Observe moderation and balance in all things.

Know those things that lead to your well-being, and those things that lead to your destruction.

Listen to and follow the guidance given to your heart.
Expect guidance to come in many forms; in prayer, in dreams, in times of quiet solitude, and in the words and deeds of wise Elders and friends.

animal's mom, I did it for a kitten who was abandoned when he was a day old and he did grow up to be an important member of our family. He's thirteen now and still thinks I'm his mother. When we got him we had two kids plus a big cat and a dog who both helped care for him so he doesn't quite know if he's a cat, a person, a dog, or a combination of all three. And Great Pyrenees are my very favorite breed although one has not yet owned me. I fell in love with them at a dog show when I was a little girl and I still hope to have one someday.

13. I saw 2 bats coming out of my bat house at dusk.
I put it up a year ago, but got no bats. The house will hold a colony of just under 100. That white nose disease has been devastating the population around here so seeing two using the house is a good sign. I'll get up on the roof (it is on the back side of the chimney) this weekend and try to do a census.

We end up with a couple later in the spring and always celebrate that the bats are back. Have a building with a bit of tar paper on it, Mr UP went to staple it down again after a windstorm and out came a bat from underneath it.

I hope you get more and they recover, that sounds like a big bathouse.

14. No cute photo, but heartwarming cat tale
In the no good deed goes unpunished category - a year ago we took in a cat that a friend of a friend had to give up. Could have been 5 years old, maybe younger, maybe older. Coarse coat, stunk to high heaven. We take him to the vet. He has major ear wax and crap. They clean him up, but it recurs. Then in January, we have his ear operated on, to no avail. Then, a month ago he develops a golf ball size abscess. We take him to the vet, the lance the abscess and put him on IV fluids for two days. He loses four pounds - down to around 7 pounds. We take him home, bring him back in a couple of days for repeat blood work. Prognosis: Not good, consider euthanizing. That afternoon. We made the appointment. Much crying.

Then we decided, wait. If he's going to die, he's going to die at home, with his family - human, canine, and feline. We set him up in his own room with litter box, kennel, food, and water. He's skeletal thin, can't walk. Then he starts eating and drinking. We clean the abscess wound regularly, ply him with painkillers and antibiotics. Last week he started jumping down off the counter where he eats, and over the weekend he started jumping up on the counter again. He's gained a couple of pounds. His abscess wound is healing. His ear problem has resolved itself. His coat is fantastic. He still looks a little demented since his whiskers were cut when the abscess was removed, and the abscess itself put pressure on his eye. But, overall, ee's a completely different cat - the cat that we should have had all along had he not been suffering. He's still not 100%, and I have no idea what his bloodwork would show, but he's back, at least for now.

So, there's a heartwarming tale that didn't involve environmental degradation, terrorism, flooding, political rants, etc. Of course, the other cat still maintains that he should take up his true aptitude, which is as a hobo, and hit the road, so he's not exactly an objective observer.

31. Very nice, I love the grebe close up, the droplets on its head and neck
walked by a small inlet, very small, one day and out came a couple grebes and a whole huge bunch of babies that couldn't fly but flapped like mad across the water. All we could figure was we disturbed the daycare since there is no way those 2 could have had 20 something babies. Made us smile to think of the other parents out fishing while those 2 took such good care of the kids.

Is it warming up yet?

You can almost literally watch the grass grow, the trees are starting to bud, and the perennials are coming up. I absolutely love this time of year here. It was about 56 today.

My husband built me a little greenhouse last fall, and I've got flats of vegetables already starting out there which should be ready to put in the ground in a couple of weeks. I'm going to try for tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse. I hope they do well.

21. Not puppies or kittens, but the cecropia moth caterpillar
that I found in the fall came out of it's cocoon today. This is what the caterpillar looked like:
It was the most weird looking thing I'd ever seen and it was five inches long. The moth is gorgeous, too. He's between six and a half and seven inches across and so far, he's still on the same plant. I hope he stays there until morning, I wanna watch him fly away.

neighbor's grandkids for a walk. I babysit them three days a week. The little one was ten months old when we found the caterpillar so he didn't know, but his big sister was almost three. She'd been waiting and waiting to see her "butterfly" hatch and I was so afraid it would happen on a day when she wasn't here. Thankfully, she was here yesterday to see us take it out of the jar and put it on the bush and she was here today when it flew away, too. I am SO glad it didn't happen when she wasn't here to see it!

after I trapped him and took him to the vet ($350 bucks for exam, shots, worms, fixing up infected bites he had) Riff Raff treated me like the wicked witch who stole him from the great outdoors. I was afraid to let him go outside and he drove me nuts in a relentless effort to escape. When he finally did, I didn't see him for 17 days - I was heartbroken. But, on a cold rainy winter day his hairy face popped up in my window, and since then we have an agreement - he can be outside but must come in when I sleep. It has worked out well. :D

investigation has been undertaken into parental misconduct on the part of Hansel & Gretel's father and stepmom.

It is alleged that they tried to abandon the two children in the deep woods to wolves and witches.

If true, it goes without saying that custody is going to be an issue.

53. I have a pet rescue story with puppies and a kitten to offer (pic heavy)...
Edited on Wed May-05-10 11:23 AM by Turborama

Josh turned up looking lost and confused one stormy night. She was an abandoned 8 week old puppy that just came into our lives out of the blue - the reason we called her Josh is because I thought she was a boy until the vet informed us otherwise but by then she was answering to Josh so it was too late.

Josh just after she came into our lives.

We thought she had a cold but when we took her to the vet he told us that it was early signs of distemper. He informed us that she only had a 10% chance of survival and when we notice signs of paralysis that's when the problems really begin. We took her out on regular exercises and fed her as much as she could eat to try and get her as strong as possible to cope with this impending totally debilitating and often fatal disease.

Josh taking a rest during one of her workout sessions

The distemper kicked in after a month or so and she gradually turned into a zombie (no appetite or thirst and paralysed from the neck down with a thousand yard stare). It took 3 months of heartbreaking intensive care to keep her alive - we had to feed and water her using a syringe with its top cut off and I carried her around during the day so she could see things which might get her brain working subliminally.

One day, just after discussing how much longer she would last and sending a prayer out to anything that might be out there, she miraculously managed to pull through and started eating solid food again and gradually her body came back to life. She still has what could be described as a full body 'tick' to this day but that's a small price to pay for what I believe was a miraculous recovery from a fatal disease.

Josh relaxing on the beach after she was well enough to go out

Before we had her spayed she escaped while she was on heat and 6 weeks later Sophie was born.

Josh and her new born pup sleeping

Sophie having breakfast

Sophie has now grown to be almost twice the size of Josh

During the night in December last year I heard a squealing from outside the garden and thought it was an insect or something. The next day I went out to investigate and it was a tiny kitten that was clinging for dear life onto a rock on the side of the fast flowing stream outside my house. We named him Henry.

I gradually introduced Henry to a very curious Josh and Sophie and as you can see in the pics below, they are now a dog and cat gang that have bonded really well. (These are pics of the three of them together not long after Henry arrived and was still weaning, Sophie and Josh stopped him from suckling quite quickly. Henry has grown quite a lot since these were taken several months ago but my camera is broken, when I get a replacement I'm going to take loads of pics of them play fighting together)

Edited on Thu May-06-10 12:35 AM by Turborama
I was amazed to see how Josh and Henry instantly acted like mother and son. When his claws got longer and he got more and more frustrated that nothing was coming out Josh soon got fed up with it and she got up and walked away when he started coming towards her. They are extremely close and she still treats him like her son, though. She's very protective of him when Sophie's play fighting gets a bit too rough. Sophie is still really young and doesn't know her own strength yet.

93. They are the most affectionate animals I've ever come across
The only problem is, when Henry play fights with his sisters he thinks he's as big as them and he's prone to getting a little damaged.

That someone who got to his ears was Josh. They were a lot worse when we found him and we tried cleaning them out with cotton wool buds and Josh did a really good job of finishing them off for us, lol.

take care of him when my mom died. That was six years ago when his doctors were saying his heart disease was so bad that his heart was only working at 13%. A year and a half later they implanted a pacemaker/defibrillator and the guy turned into the Energizer Bunny. He never stops, but the things he thinks of to do are things that shouldn't or don't need to be done or that he figures out he can't do halfway through and I have to do them. He drives me insane, lol. I know what you're going through, or something close to it anyway, so f you ever need a shoulder or someone to listen, please pm me.

Edited on Thu May-06-10 01:27 AM by kas125
a teenager and was babysitting. It was time for the kids to go to bed and one wouldn't go because the dog, who was sixteen years old, wasn't there to get into bed with him. We searched everywhere for that dog and couldn't figure out where she'd gone. The kids finally fell asleep and I decided to do a more thorough search and found the missing dog under the parents' bed where she had given birth to one puppy. Nobody knew she was pregnant and nobody could figure out how such an old dog could have a puppy, but she did. The family kept the puppy, of course.

Note, you might want to locate the tissues *before* you click, as it will be hard to see after you start reading...

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2011740342_electronboy30m.html

Erik Martin, who is living with liver cancer, has always wanted to be a superhero. On Thursday, the regional chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted him that wish with an elaborate event that involved hundreds of volunteers in Bellevue and Seattle.

Got this from Ezra Klein's new "wonkbook" feature.

Is anything cuter than a 1 day old chick?

These are 1 day old Blue Copper Marans.
They hatched 2 weeks ago, and are still in their brooder in our bathroom.
That makes bathroom trips entertaining.
"Peep?...Peep...Peep".

They will be joining the rest of our flock in a few months.

This makes me happy.

Peace to you.

90. These chicks are the first Copper Marans we have.
The chicks are Two Toned black and smoky gray.
Two of them are showing a small copper blaze behind the eye, not visible in the photo.

We bought 12 fertile eggs online.
The eggs shipped to us were very dark.....chocolate dark.
It will be a while before we see any eggs from these birds, but we expect dark eggs.

We have 2 New Hampshire Reds,
2 Astroplorps,
2 Barred Rocks,
1 Brown Leghorn
The rooster was supposed to be an Austrolorp hen, but Mother Nature knows best.

We got our birds in 2007, and have come to love them.
They are much more intelligent, beautiful, and engaging than we expected.
They are a part of our daily entertainment, and the Free Range eggs are delicious.
We like them so much that we want to expand our flock with other interesting breeds.

The chickens have easily been the most cost effective and consistent producers of healthy food since we moved to The Woods in 2006 and started doing for ourselves.

The chickens are the best. They eat weeds and slugs and bugs, they give eggs and manure, they are characters. You have a pretty rooster.

Im sure someone will be glad she is safe when the shelter opens tomorrow.
and I rescued a puppy and kept her last month. does that help? her name is Lily.
