2. Glad to recommend. He was the best - the voice of summer.
This is showing up on many DU forums, and rightfully so. He transcended baseball, although he would scoff at such a notion. The voice of summer, and one of the most beloved figures in sports. In Michigan, we all loved Ernie. I listened to him for more than 40 years. Pretty significant, I would say.

RIP.

4. I've missed him ever since he retired
Baseball just doesn't sound the same on the radio without him. I always loved listening to him on opening day -- that's when I knew winter was really over and summer wasn't far away. Nothing like Ernie's voice coming through the speakers.

He was a wonderful human being, most of all.

RIP, Ernie. You'll be missed.

6. So sorry to hear this
Although I knew he had been ill. He was a true gentleman. This Yankee fan ( grateful we still have Bob Shephard, though he is missed at the stadium) sends sincere condolences to Tigers fans.

10. Bob Shephard is the greatest PA announcer in the history of baseball.
No one is even remotely close.

8. Damn.
My dad always had the Tigers game on the radio while he did yard work, etc. I can still hear Harwell's play-by-play in my head.

RIP Ernie. You've earned it.

9. On of the greatest ever!! I remember the old days as a kid listening to
Bob Prince, Mel Allen, Bob Elson, Red Barber, Dizzy Dean, and all the great Major League Baseball announcers on my AM radio. Back in those days you could pick up MLB broadcasts on clear channel AM stations
all over the east and south. Ernie did the Tigers games, and I could sometimes even pick them up on my father's old Zenith shortwave tube-type.
