1. Good
and they probably didn't need to torture anybody to do it.

This should be a reminder to all those who think torture is the way to go that we can get results with good police work.

Body movement is culturally inscribed. Just ask the locals next time you're out of the USA if they can tell who is a tourist and who isn't .. and many can say which country they are from.

I know that kind of body movement, you can't be 100% obviously but you can get a strong feeling based on pattern recognition

35. So, despite your assertion, you've got nothing but a 50/50 chance of being right.
There has got to more, if we are truly going to analyze and discuss a situation than a 50/50 chance based on speculation.

It's crazy, I know, to expect more than a toss of a coin, but I still like to think that a reality based community and discussion should be a model for the norm rather than the exception.

15. Actually you can tell the tourist through camera and general attitude
Americans in particular. But most of the time, you can't through body movement.

That is racial profiling

And lord knows I worked in a border city where we got tourists from all over the world. You could tell the moment people started to speak...

33. My best friend and I could always spot someone from Europe by the way
Edited on Tue May-04-10 12:30 AM by gateley
s/he moved, walked. Hard to pinpoint, but they just moved differently than people who were born or raised in the U.S. So I know what you're saying. It's subtle and I'm not sure when/how we first noticed, but once we did, it was easy to spot from then on. And, may I say, they move beautifully, much more fluid and lyrical (or something) than we Americans do.

I never thought past that, but reading what you wrote about other cultures, I'll pay more attention in the future.

ETA I don't think it's racial, but rather more cultural -- what do you think?

88. Mostly cultural, but both
because even if it isn't politically correct to point it out different races have different body structures. This leads not only to tendencies of body movement, based on kinetics as well as culture, but certain facial expressions and ways of speaking due to cranial structure.

It's very much cultural as well because humans imitate/influence each other in a natural process across race and nationality if living together.

93. Since reading your posts, I've become more aware and was intently watching
an Australian sports star on TV last night, and her expressions, the way she moved her mouth (cranial structure?), other can't-put-my-finger-on-it clues made me think she was like a lot of Australians I've seen speak. This is really interesting.

And I swear to god the French move with that certain je ne sais quoi that sets them apart. French women, anyway. I wish I could emulate them.

it's been reported since this first came out that he was a naturalized citizen.

Federal agents and police detectives arrested a Connecticut man, a naturalized United States citizen from Pakistan, early Tuesday in connection with the failed Times Square car bombing, according to people briefed on the investigation.

61. I did google it. All I could find was "Pakistan Descent."
When referring to "descent", it more often than not means a natural born citizen with reference to heritage. (I.e., I am a U.S. citizen of Irish descent.) That is why I asked for a link. It looks like the NY Times, which has just recenlty gone to print, is reporting "naturalized". Okay then.

I've not once claimed a poster is wrong, I only asked for evidence. And for some bizarre reason, none would provide it.

Nope. You never provided a link because you didn't have one.
That is, you made an accusation and provided no evidence, even when asked (repeatedly) and expected me to agree with you. The fact that the NY Times (finally, hours later) confirms your assertions does not mean that you were right in throwing out baseless accusations.

85. Link, please, on that 'consistent reporting'
I never saw the word 'descent' and frankly, it is not often used in describing people. All I ever read was that he was naturalized citizen, from Pakistan. So I never saw these reports you are saying you saw consistently, I saw what the others are speaking of.
So, as what is good for the goose and all, give us a link to prove that consistently, naturalized was not said, but 'descent' was used.

repeat:

Body movement is culturally inscribed. Just ask the locals next time you're out of the USA if they can tell who is a tourist and who isn't .. and many can say which country they are from.

I know that kind of body movement, you can't be 100% obviously but you can get a strong feeling based on pattern recognition

and good for Obama ultimately.

74. Just guessing here, but it might have to do with reading about Pakistani civilians...
being disintegrated by U.S. predator drones.

In a word: blowback.

80. This has nothing to do with racial profiling
They didn't stop everyone who looked "Middle Eastern or Hispanic" (the description given by the seller of the SUV) and ask them whether they'd recently purchased an SUV in CT. That's what racial profiling is, and that's why it is both legally wrong and fucking immoral. Besides, good luck stopping everyone in NYC who "looks" Middle eastern or Hispanic. It's just as fucking stupid as stopping everyone in Arizona who looks like could vaguely be "Mexican." That's why Arizona richly deserves the consequences of whatever boycotts go into effect. Either the people of Arizona take responsibility for the unjust laws made by their legislature, or they do not. But the rest of us don't have to put up with such outright racist bullshit.

73. He was living in the Bridgeport/Shelton areas of CT. The local news here in CT showed
that there was a massive convergence of FBI, NY and CT officials and a bomb squad all at the guy's former house. I guess being in Bridgeport gave him easy access to go to NYC. Not too far away. The people on the street were freaking out a bit. One thing out Bridgeport....it is a city and they see all types. Still they were shocked. Hey, I would be too if a would-be terrorist lived next door to me.

81. Now, for some real fun
Hmmm, doesn't Glenn Beck live in CT?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Beck

In 1999, Beck married his second wife, Tania.<21> They joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in October 1999, partly at the urging of his daughter Mary.<24><25> The couple has two children, Raphe (who is adopted) and Cheyenne. Beck lives in a multimillion dollar home in Connecticut with his wife and four children.<26>

Edited on Tue May-04-10 08:34 AM by Jennicut
I survived being a teenager listening to Glenn Beck in the mornings on the way to highschool. He was weird then too.

"In 2008, CNN Money ranked New Canaan first in the nation with the highest median family income." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Canaan,_Connecticut

Glenn Beck should never say anything about "liberal elitism". Being here in CT, it just makes me laugh. He lives in like the richest town in the United States.

92. Ann Coulter was born in NYC but moved to New Canaan when she was a kid.
Russo lives in New Canaan, I think Dell'Abate lives in Greenwich. Ingraham grew up in Glastonbury, which is not too far from Terryville, where I live.
I find it interesting that conservatives love to comment about latte liberals but live in rich areas or grew up rich. It is just hilarious. Russo is a Republican as well, not sure about Baba Booey.

87. According to an old neighbor of his (interviewed on CNN)...
His neighbor from a year ago said he had a wife and two kids (neighbor's kid and his kids use to play together). He told this neighbor he worked on wall street. They told this neighbor they were moving to Missouri and after they left, their house was foreclosed on.

Terrorists come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. If what the neighbor says is true and if this is indeed the right guy (and the evidence is looking pretty strong), then I'm honestly surprised. I wonder where his wife and kids are and if the wife knew what her husband was planning.
