3. More like the Safety in numbers
principle.

People with this bent need to learn that not every offense is a "kill them!" offense.

8. So you would participate in a piss on the crucifix day?
I mean it's your free speech at stake here.

10. If the church called for death to anyone who pissed on a crucifix, of course.
Do you recognize the phrase, "I am Spartacus"?

If, for instance, a flag-burning amendment were passed it would be the obligation of every decent person to burn a flag. Not to insult the flag, but to protest the amendment itself.

21. No, it is an apt analogy
Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 02:36 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Many very high-ranking Islamic clerics have, over the years, called for the killing of all sorts of people for all sorts of asinine things and they are leaders of different Islamic sects with many adherents.

There is a reason I said "the church" rather than "the pope." You seem to have read that as meaning the Catholic Church and that's fair. I should have said "a" church rather than "the" church. But do you think Catholicism is the only sect in Christianity?

There is no such thing as "The Muslim Church" nor is there a "Christan Church" Who do you think is the leader of Christianity? The Pope? The Archbishop of Canterbury? The president of the Southern Baptist Association? The head of the mormons?

Recognized leaders of sects of Islam have often called for all sorts of abominations as the policy of their CHURCH. The particular religions they lead.

Islam and Christian are both broad terms.

11. no, I hated the piss on the crucifix thing
but I loved Life of Brian.

I don't respect insulting people's religion, but I do respect making fun of religion.

17. and of course it is VERY subjective as to what is making fun of and what is insulting
what is nice that, in america, we don't have to make that distinction, or risk legal consequences, like in countries that have "hate speech" laws etc.

i am sure some christians DID consider life of brian to be an insult to their religion

oh well

15. It's already been done, and not a single embassy was burned down.
There wasn't even one murder over it, as I recall.

5. "Bash" is the most inappropriately used word on DU, imo
and you are definitely continuing the trend.

It may be a dumb idea, but it is far from "bashing."

20. It's not bashing muslims
Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 02:32 PM by Tailormyst
It's bashing a certain portion of Islam that uses murder and threats of murder to try and impose their religious views on others. They should be mocked and belittled regularly.

your ideas and beliefs will be subject to criticism and parody. There should be no sacred cows and no exceptions.
