Cspan caller tells black guest to thank his lucky stars for slavery...
...Or he'd have never been born in the greatest country in the world.

Folks, you can't make stuff like this up.

1. That's not that rare an opinion I don't think.
It kind of depends on not knowing a lot about Africa and having a very negative view of what you do know.

9. My limited observation of moderators has shown me that they rarely,
if ever, call outright racists like that on their racism.

Thus, they implicitly condone the statements.

13. There is no delay, it is real time. I've gotten on 3x in the past...
and have found that people I had a question for, (guests), were generally dumbfounded by the simplicity of my questions.

One was, "what if the decision made was a poor one, or just plain the wrong one?" The woman i asked that to, a bush defender, said she'd rather not answer that question....Gee.

As for the moderators, they do not take sides, they specifically watch for abuseive callers, one called once and called Charlie Rangel a "dumbshit", the 'n' started for the next word, but he was cut off by then, Rangel just laughed & shook his head. The moderators never take sides, it is not their job to be partisan. Sometimes they will ask questions on the callers points, but they have to be as neutral as possible. I think they do a good job of that...:D

8. In a way we all
have to be thankful for all the awful things that have happened in the past.
For example, if World War II hadn't happened my parents would have never met and I would have never been born. But for me to say "I sure am happy that millions of people died during WWII so that I could be born" would be kind of stupid.

18. The logic of right wing nuts simple
A woman marrying a business man = self made woman. Be grateful that you have a job, theres people in africa that don't = don't worry be happy, you are a productive member of society not a welfare bum, btw who cares your not making a living wage, you should have picked a better job to hire yourself into. Blacks should be grateful = they get welfare, they get SSI ( nut checks )they get the first chance at good paying jobs and we whites have taken a back seat on the bus for them.

In other words, we are uncaring, insensitive assholes that are above everyone else because we look like those in the top 1% so we are the chosen people.

24. People who say that are the most uneducated and unsophisticated
Edited on Fri May-04-07 10:23 AM by higher class
in our country. They have no concept of their heritage. They have never read and they haven't eve seen movies. They live in a terrible world of arrogance-fear-stupidity. I am using strong words because it is one statement that makes me go off the wall.

Besides being an insult to good people in every other country -

We could boast about our technological superiority, but we traded our secrets for permissions to establishe military bases and other 'favors'. And we outsourced all the remaining technological know-how.

We could boast about our self governing political structure, but we smashed it to smithereens by allowing vote theft and the destruction-reconstruction of our Constitution which is in full swing as we dialog - rewritten by the Federalist Society and the vast right wing to give it all to the religious radicals and corporations with an every-ascending military dictatorship written in to it (for profit and control by a few) instead of a democracy.

I claim my superiority by denouncing that person as a self made idiot who thrives on hate and is driven by fear.

17. Slavery, which was repugnanat to the common law and Modern Thought, had to be "reinvented"
once travel made it economically possible for the kidnapping and transport of individuals from Africa to the Americas. The "Spanish model" held that it was a sort of collective punishment for not being Christian, i.e., "Moors," and that it was an educational experience for the kidnap victims and their descendents.
Once it reared its ugly head in North America, people were at odds at how to proceed once a generation had been Christianized and the thought of many in the early 17th Century was that baptism and learning the faith nullified slavery. That would never do, of course, so Maryland and Virginia had to invent slavery as a legal, self-perpetuating condition. The other colonies followed suit rapidly.
When slavery could still be discussed in slave owning states without fear of state/private retribution, the "enobling and civilization" theme was often used still as a justification.
Obviously the caller never read or even heard of any of the seminal works on slavery, such as Frederickson's Black Image in the White Mind, Orlando Patterson, or even Edmund Morgan or Gene Genovese, much less taken a look around himself to see the discordant racial makeup of our elite. It does not stand for close scrutiny under reason's lens that 1/5 of our population occupy only a handful of seats in our Congress and professorships after having been most thoroughly "Americanized" over the course of 4 centuries unless the stigma of "otherness" remains firmly entrenched in our collective psyche.
To use Emile Durkheim's examples of organic and mechanical solidarity, the US as a whole has a cancer eating at one of its organs, and that cancer is racism!

23. I heard that caller - he was like racist Barbara Bush and what she

said about the N.O. citizens.

if we could have seen the Wash. Journal caller we would have seen him smirking over how clever he thought he was saying that. and can't you just see the Bushites laughing over Barbara saying what she said.

the guest was quite informative and sharp. wouldn't mind seeing/hearing him again.

26. I've read this argument, but never heard anyone say it.
Pretty repugnant. But I had a conversation with a co-worker yesterday about torture and Guantanamo, and it was revealing. He just shrugged and cheerfully, matter-of-factly said some people don't deserve due process. He said he knew it wasn't a popular thing to say, but that a lot of Americans agreed or else the detention camp would have been shut down already. Sigh.
