And then he accepted Stimulus funds to help Florida out when the economy was at its lowest. Those two things got the ultra-right wing crowd upset. Mostly recently, the Florida Legislature passed a bill that tied teacher's pay and retention to standardized test scores with no adjustments for the level of the students they had at the time. And the bill made it illegal to consider educational level or experience of the teachers when considering raises. Crist did not automatically sign it - he listened to the opinions of the people and vetoed it.
Since that bill was part of Jeb Bush's long term plans, this pissed the ultra-right wing and Crist's numbers, which had been dropping, fell off a cliff.
So now Crist's best chance of getting elected as a US Senator is to run as an Independent. This worries me since I was hoping that Crist and Rubio would use up each other's campaign money fighting over the Republican primary and give Week a chance at the office.
Then there is the slim chance that Crist might consider runnning for another term as Governor. He'd probably win that race without too much trouble, since Bill McCollum, the current Attorney General who is running for Gov. on the Republican ticket, has gone a little too far with his suit claiming the Health Care Reform Bill is unconstitutional. And Alex Sink, the Democratic candidate has been low profile and only started picking up points in the polls since the lawsuit was filed. A lot of moderates and Independents would likely vote for Crist.
Crist is simply too rational and moderate for the Republican party as it exists today.
