I keep hearing that they are paying the money back early, but it that just in reference to scheduled payments, or the whole thing? And what about Chrysler? What are the prospects for that money to be paid back.

And before some impulsive twit decides to jump to conclusions, yes, I supported the auto bailouts.

1. Eventually yes
The final payback will be when they can float an IPO and become a public company again. They are ahead of schedule on paying back however.

Chrysler? Much less likely, but then again much less money.

2. It's the direct loan.
They were loaned some 6 billion dollars from the government which is now paid back ahead of schedule. They have not bought back any of the shares of the company owned by the government, which amount so about a $50 billion and which constituted the "takeover" portion of the bailout.

3. GM was split into a "new GM" and an "old GM"
The payments are being made by the "new GM". The old GM is a huge loss of taxpayer dollars.

4. ...until they float the IPO
There really is only one GM, and all government investment, either as loans or as equity, will eventually be repaid.
