At the end, he said, 'as my mother said, molto grazie!'

3. Just like one of my old teachers...
A bit too easy going at times, but a nice guy and a great story teller...Would look at a picture from our math text book and tell us a story about the area in the picture when he visited it.

4. Is there a Montpelier in Italy?
Edited on Sat Apr-17-10 01:17 AM by Toucano
I think he was born in Vermont.

The generation that immigrates gets to hyphenate.

The generation born here, is simply an American - at best.

7. Who cares?
Surnames don't necessarily point to one's complete ethnicity.

8. Especially with Anglicization
A lot of times when people arrived here in this country they Anglicized their surnames. My great-great-grandfather did that when he arrived here, translating his surname from German to English.

9. My surname ends in "sky", what's my mother's ethnic background?
Senator Leahy is not a Republican, therefore a bullshit artist.

10. well, Vermonters know
Leahy likes to talk about his family and his state. Love the guy, but he can be a bit of a gas bag on those subjects. (so can I)

Seriously though, the story of Italian immigrants at the end of the 19th century, to central VT is an interesting one and one documented by their skill in buildings and monuments across the country and beyond. Thousands of skilled stoneworkers came to VT to work in the granite industry.

I think such conversations are my reasons for posting as I do. Makes me a social anthropologist?

Was delightful to see him chat about this at hearing; haven't seen/heard such in the past, as I've lived down the road from him! And he hasn't appeared to have Italian qualities, tho maybe just been misundersanding his 'gas bag-ishness?' (I think I have it too, but poland/russia/rumania??? whats my excuse for feeling so attached to Italy and Italians?)

OF COURSE, STONEWORKERS!

Was trying to remember! Was that the actual name? Liked it because had more maple flavor than others.

No, MY MISTAKE! Thinking 'I Want my MAYPO!!!' Did like Malto for the consistency, I think.
