Republicans continue attempting to obstruct Goodwin Liu's hearing, with lavish hypocrisy

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) renewed his call today to postpone the confirmation hearing for federal appellate nominee Goodwin Liu, citing another discovery of information that Liu did not include in materials he sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee...

Liu�s confirmation hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday. Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) has declined to postpone it, noting that it has been postponed twice before, and a Leahy spokeswoman reiterated late Thursday that the hearing will go on as scheduled. Other Democrats have said that nominees of President George W. Bush disclosed far less without senators objecting.

Democrats on the Judiciary respond

Senator Leahy noted the think Republican hypocrisy:

"I am concerned about things not coming in, I was concerned when the week before John Robert's hearing he suddenly came in with 50 thousand pages that he had forgotten and then omitted 10 thousand but we went forward with the hearing, I actually voted for him as you recall and not a single Republican raised a question."

Senator Feinstein provided even more detail:

"Mr. Chairman I just actually deplore what's happening here, attack attack attack, it's ruin somebody before they have had an opportunity, its using these kinds of arguments... let me give you some other cases, Judge Michael McConnell appointed by President Bush to the 10th Circuit, is prolific law professor from 1985 to 2001, his questionnaire also asks for all speeches on issues realated to constitutional law or legal policy, he did not list a single speech... he got confirmed, there was not an issue, Judge Jeffery Sutton, appointed by President Bush to the 6th Circuit, submitted a questionnaire containing the following statement on page 4 regarding speeches with no listing of the items requested..."

Comparing the above examples with Liu's disclosures an obviously frustrated Senator Feinstein noted:

"In his original submission Goodwin Liu listed 66 speaking events, in addition to 22 scholarly articles, 27 other published works, reports or testimony, and 96 media interviews. With or without his supplemental materials, Liu has made one of the mist extensive disclosures of any recent Circuit Court nominee... this man is exemplary, if we want to dumb down the Judiciary this is a good way to do it."
