Drivers Who Lock Their Cars At Local Convenience Stores Could Get Slurpee Reward

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Kissimmee Police Department has partnered with 7-Eleven, rewarding drivers who lock their cars and keep valuables out of sight in an effort to cut down on victim-assisted crime.

The program, called Lock, Keep and Take, is aimed at teaching drivers to protect themselves, Kissimmee Police said.

According to police, victim assisted crimes, like unlocked car thefts, are widespread in Kissimmee which is 20 miles south of Orlando.

Police who find locked cars with valuables out of site will leave behind a coupon for a free small Slurpee, a frozen drink offered at 7-Eleven stores.

1. Nice.

2. So cops have an excuse to look inside of and try to open your car?
I would just as soon opt out of this "reward" thank you very much. I know I am just weird about privacy but I believe the right to be left the hell alone is the most sacred.

3. Where are you getting this from? Cops can already look inside your car
I dont think they try to open the car, they can simply see if it is locked or unlocked.

7. A lot of modern cars make it less obvious when they are locked.
No more little pillars you can pull with a clothes hanger.

Of course they can look into cars. But now they have an excuse to spend part of their day ---- looking into cars.

So they can go into, shall we say a lower class part of town, and look into every car in a Wal-mart parking lot. What happens when they spy something illegal?

No thanks.

5. +1000 there's ALWAYS an ulterior motive
I'd take the simple position of, hey, I haven't broke any laws, so stay well the fuck away from my car, thank you

4. If you don't lock your doors and leave valuables in your car you deserve to be robbed
they shouldn't really be spending time and resources on this.

6. Some people need reminders.
Who steals from cars parked outside convenience stores, anyway? That's pretty bold.

I leave things on the back of my truck all the time. Groceries, etc. The only thing that ever got stolen was a bottle of juice, replaced with someone's empty beer can.

10. How will they know the valuables are out of sight, if they can't see them?
Do I have to put a note on the windshield - "Attention! Valuable computer and jewelry hidden in trunk!"?
