Mayors make their rounds, meals in tow

Leavenworth, Kan. -

Margaret Jesse and Joseph and JoAnn Reindl are visited five days a week by representatives of the Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels.

But it’s not every day that they open the door to find the mayors of their respective cities handing them their food.

Both Kenneth Bernard, mayor of Lansing, and Davis Moulden, mayor of Leavenworth, recently helped with routes on the council’s Meals on Wheels program as part of Mayors for Meals — an annual event where community leaders deliver meals throughout the county.

“It’s really to bring awareness to some of our programs,” said Julie Stark, nutrition coordinator for the Council on Aging. “And for the mayor to visit some people who can’t come to see him.”

More than 1,000 mayors across the country and in Canada deliver meals in March each year as part of the event, she said.
