What do you think of ObamaCare?

Joe Barton
U.S. Congress

One of the most revolutionary things Congress has done in several decades passed the House last week and the only thing bipartisan about the Democrats health care “reform” plan was opposition to it. (Note that no Republicans supported it, but dozens of Democrats crossed the aisle to vote against it.)

I believe it represents a government take over of one of the most personal things in everyone’s life – the relationship between you and your doctor.

We must change this law. There is a long list of reasons it is bad for America:

It is going to radically change health care as we know it today. This law will cause millions of Americans to lose their current employer based health care once it is completely implemented in 2014. It proclaims to provide universal coverage for all of our low income citizens - and on paper that’s true - but as Democrats expand the Medicaid rolls, they aren’t expanding the pool of Doctors to serve them. Common sense will tell you that it doesn’t do any good to have an insurance card if you can’t get a doctor to see you.

On top of that, states will have to foot the bill for new Medicaid mandates. It’s my expectation that some of the states are going to decide that they can’t afford it and just opt out causing a crisis in 4 to 6 years.

As if that wasn’t bad enough - for the first time there will be taxpayer funding for elective abortions. The bill that the President signed requires that in every state there be at least one health plan that provides for coverage of elective abortions.

My Republican colleagues and I have already begun trying to repeal and replace these and many other job-killing, tax-raising, care-rationing parts of the Democrats’ health “reform” law.

Despite all of the terrible things in this law, it does contain a few positives. We should keep things like covering pre-existing conditions and allowing children to stay on their parents insurance until age 26, but the parts of the law that will destroy our economy and our health care system need to be eliminated as soon as possible.

People in the 6th District have not been shy about sharing their opinions about ObamaCare. My office has been inundated with phone calls, emails and letters, but I wanted to give you a chance to meet with me face to face so I will be holding several town hall meetings in early April.

Tuesday, April 6
