MO Dem announces on the House floor that she is a rape survivor
JEFFERSON CITY — Richmond Heights Democrat Stacey Newman today brought her personal experience to the debate on an abortion bill.

She announced on the House floor that she was a rape survivor.

“I can recall that incident as if it had happened today,” Newman said, during her remarks against an abortion bill that passed in the House today.

The bill, sponsored by Speaker Pro Tem Bryan Pratt, would make coercing a woman to obtain an abortion a crime, and would additionally provide women with additional information 24 hours before an abortion could be performed.

It would also require prosecutors to be informed when an individual under age 18 inquired about an abortion, whether or not the woman completes the procedure. Supporters say that provision could help identify men who have impregnated young women through acts of rape or incest.

“If this bill became law when I was in that situation, I would have been deemed incompetent to make my own reproductive health choices, and I find that greatly insulting,” Newman said.
