Is there no justice at all? Must the kooks always prevail?
First this, yesterday:

Marine's father ordered to pay Westboro's court costs
Church members had conducted anti-gay protests at the funeral of Marine who died in Iraq

Then this, today:

Marine's Father Will Not Pay Court-Ordered Funeral Protesters' Fees

FOXNews.com

The father of a Marine killed in Iraq whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters told Fox News he will defy a court order and not pay the protesters' appeal costs.

The father of a Marine killed in Iraq whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters told Fox News he will defy a court order and not pay the protesters' appeal costs. Albert Snyder, of York, Pa., told Fox News he does not intend to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps, the leader of Kansas' Westboro Baptist Church, which held protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006.

"I don't think I'm going to be writing a check until I hear from the Supreme Court," Snyder told Fox News on Tuesday. "I'm not about to pay them anything."

The Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder on Friday to pay Phelps. A two-page decision supplied by his attorneys offered no details on how the court came to its decision. The decision adds "insult to injury," said Sean Summers, one of Snyder's attorneys. Snyder is also struggling to come up with fees associated with filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, his attorneys said.

1. Appeal, Mr. Snyder
This isn't a miscarriage of justice--justice was aborted!

2. My theory about the odious Phelps family and their "church":
They are grifters, pure and simple. They don't even believe their own "God hates fags" bullshit. They've merely come up with a gimmick that's guaranteed to offend pretty much everybody, and they are using it to make money from litigation. Standing around with "God Hates Fags" signs obviously will offend the GLBT community and most liberals. But, if you are a Phelps (and they are almost all lawyers, btw), go farther; be even more provocative: Demonstrate outside the funeral of a soldier or a police officer or some other person most people would consider heroic or honorable, holding signs suggesting that the person's death was deserved as God's punishment for America's toleration of gay people. Provoke the family and friends of the deceased as much as possible. Take advantage of your First Amendment right to be despicable asshole; push your free speech right to the edge. And make a bundle when your rights are "violated" when you are sued or assaulted.

That's their game. I'm convinced it's been a scam from the beginning.

5. That's not at all unreasonable a premise.
His "church" has only family as members.

(As you point out) all the younger generation are lawyers and in the family business.

More than a few "failed preachers" are just crappy at that particular con but go on to other successes.

3. No one likes Phelps.
The local political radio guy here in Philly, Michael Smerconish, took up a collection for the Snyder defense fund today to pay this off if the Supreme Court goes against him. He had collected several thousand dollars the last I heard. If he wins the money goes to a veterans group.
