Sean Penn smeared by Maria Conchita Alonso
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 11:19 PM by upi402
Sean Penn's costar in the 1988 cop drama "Colors" has written an impassioned open letter to the actor about recent remarks Penn made praising Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.

Actor Maria Conchita Alonso penned the letter, titled "An Open Letter to Sean Penn," on the website Newsbusters. In it, she expresses her disappointment at Penn's statements made on the March 5 episode of HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher." On the panel-based talk show, Penn praised the Venezuelan president, saying Chavez had been elected in "14 of the most transparent elections in the globe, and been elected democratically." Conchita Alonso, who was born in Cuba 52 years ago but raised in Venezuela, begs to differ.

"Dear Sean, WHY?" she begins. "Even though I have great respect for your artistic talent, I was appalled by a recent television interview where you vigorously showed support for the regime of Hugo Chavez. Therefore, I've decided to set the record straight for you regarding the Chavez regime, supporting my case based not only on my political ideologies, but on proven facts you choose to ignore. Otherwise, I believe your position would be different.

In a fervent yet respectful tone, Conchita Alonso goes on to lay out her case against Chavez, citing lack of free speech, disputed elections, international posturing, and escalating violence and poverty, among others, as issues facing Venezuela under and because of Chavez. "My intention isn't to convince you," Conchita Alonso writes, "but to let you know what is truly happening in this beautiful country of noble people, Venezuela. I would encourage you to investigate in depth the 'inside story' and realize for yourself the dark side behind the person you choose to idolize." "

As Sean Penn is knee deep in Haiti's mud and disease, this right wing hack is smearing him with her own brand of mud. What gall claiming that Chavez cheated elections when he is still battling the same corporatist scumbags that hauled him off as a prisoner after Chavez was democratically elected in spite of the same crap going on in the US right now.

I can't understand all the anti-Chavez people even here only looking at the propaganda in the media. Most have never even watched, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised;

All the rightwing DLCers here will love this Cuban native's thoughts.

1. Yikes! She's a McCain/Palin supporter!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar%C3%ADa_Conchita_Alonso

Alonso is an outspoken critic of elected Venezuelan leader Hugo Chvez, whom she has described as a "dictator" like "Hitler,"<2> and those who vote and support him as "terrorists."<3> She has appeared on Sean Hannity's Hannity's America on May 6, 2007, Hannity & Colmes on June 1, 2007<2> and Bill O'Reilly's The O'Reilly Factor on August 13, 2007 and March 11, 2009.

In the fall of 2008, Alonso endorsed the presidential campaign of Republican nominee John McCain, writing:
As a Latina and a new American citizen, I believe in this country and its people, and I believe that we need more than just "change." We need a leader who can bring about the right kind of change, and John McCain has the experience and judgment necessary to lead us in these uncertain times. I grew up in Cuba and Venezuela, and I am appalled that Barack Obama apparently wants to emulate the "spread the wealth" economic policies of those countries and negotiate with their leaders.<4>

Mara's brother, Roberto Alonso, was one of the four speakers who gave a speech at the closing of Senator John McCain's campaign in Florida.

I'm appalled that anyone would support McCain/Palin. She should be ashamed of herself, voting to destroy her new country.

4. Just like Venezuelans who oppose Chavez, you have to look
at their background. Like almost all of the Venezuelan oligarchs, she had to come from a family of means to be able to "escape" from Cuba to be raised in an atmosphere that offered more alternatives. Most of the wealthy in Venezuela are the descendants of Spanish imperial forces that grew to wealth on the backs of indigenous people.

Chavez represents the indigenous people trying to restore a balance of power. People with power and influence will not give it up unless under the fear of force. Chavez isn't so much trying so much to lower the ceiling as to raise the floor. Unfortunately, the oligarchs don't understand that it isn't a matter of taking all they own but just offering a livable income for those that were repressed for so long.

2. What, exactly, is upsetting you?
That some here will agree with Alonso while others will agree with Penn?

That not everyone will agree with you? This is a democracy and that is not a crime.

7. It's not a crime. You can have your own opinion but you can't have your own facts,
however.

Those same Miami wingnuts like this lady who claim that the transparent, internationally monitored and certified elections in Venezuela done on paper ballots with a hefty audit are not good are the same people who brought you Florida 2000 on their screwed up, dirty as hell voting systems that threw the Bush/Gore contest to the Supreme Court on the backs of black voters.

lol

It always surprises me when DUers can't recognize wingnuts when the target of their bullshit is some other country.

16. They claim propaganda as fact, and fact as propaganda
The TV News is working as well here as it did when Chavez's fair election was crushed with a right wing coup incited by their media.

told her crowd to "pull over" anyone they see with an Obama bumper sticker.

These people are fascists and they're out in the light now.

whose brother, Roberto Alonso, sheltered scores of Colombian paramilitaries who had infiltrated Venezuela to attack military targets and spark a coup de 'etat against President Hugo Chavez ??

Luckily the Venezuelan military detected and captured the Colombians at Roberto Alonso's farm near Caracas on Sunday, May 9, 2004.

And luckily for the Colombian thugs, the Venezuelan government did not execute them; instead they were deported back to Colombia.

Two of the captured Colombian paramilitaries wearing Venezuelan camo uniforms.

They were lucky they were not shot.

Apparently the garlic worn around my neck does keep some of the vampire class away from me.

Anyway thank you for explaining more about her.

And hopefully another shipment of garlic arrives soon!

Wow! I had no idea he sponsored paramilitaries to stage an armed coup against Chavez. Thanks for this. DUers are so easy to fool. But with so much propaganda her, it's no wonder. I had no idea of the fact you cite, juts the big picture.

26. I lived in Venezuella too.
The old oligarchs are had a yearly habit of emptying the bank accounts of whatever bank they owned, flying to switzerland to their numbered account, and then waiting until the next corp controlled government came into power, bribing whoever they needed to, and coming back the next year to do it again.

Say what you will about Chavez, he has improved the lot of the average citizen - a lot.

25. This all boils down to the basic defination of Christian as defined by Paul vs. Jesus
Jesus defined being saved based on good works; whereas, Paul said belief alone would save you. So for many fundie Paul-following Christians, they believe that as long as they believe they can sit on their asses and they'll end up in heaven. But for true Christians, even those who might define themselves as atheists - it's all about the good works. Going out and helping others who need helping.

Ironically Jesus was prophesized in the old testament whereas Paul was one of hundreds of people who helped spread Christianity after Jesus's resurection and assention into heaven. There are no old testament prophesies about Paul. So why are these 'xtians' believing that their salvation is based simply on saying "I believe"?. There were hundreds of people that could have been selected for post-Jesus stories but Paul was selected. I say it's a bit scary for those that think Paul is their key to salvation.
