We've had hundreds of foster dogs through the house in the last 4 years. We often foster terminally ill dogs when they come in. That way at least someone treats them well in the last days the have.

131. I just wanted to say thank you!
As the proud owner of 2 rescue dogs, I really appreciate those who would take in foster dogs.

I hope to keep foster dogs someday in the future. I just know that I can't handle that right now since I don't have a fenced in back yard, and I already have my hands full excercising my 2 dogs who are both over 50 lbs (I can't walk a 3rd, lol).

wanted to go to Oregon (maybe next year) but THEY will all come with us!! People have told me about programs where you can rent RV's for a reduced price if you use it for a certain length of time.

Not sure about it, will have to research, but I UNDERSTAND how your friend feels! Our animals are just like our children!!

22. I love her!! I have puppy fever too.
I went to the shelter to adopt a dog, found the perfect one too!! But the hurdles for me were just too huge:

1. They demanded my whole family get there to "meet" her (one of my family members is travelling out of the country so that was out).

2. Needed to speak to my vet (I have 6 vets for all of my animals and one of them is on maternity leave - ah well, denied! Never mind the other five were all thumbs up about it!)

3. I wasn't going to crate train her. Why should I? We live on a farm and are outside with our pets, with us 24/7.

So I am a shelter reject. I'm currently in talks with a breeder however about a purebred puppy. I can't wait!! Your dog is so wonderful!!

75. Try another shelter -- this one seems a little *too* perfectionistic...
Our puppies and kittens are crated (in quite a large one, actually) when they are being housebroken during times when I can't watch them every second, and while they are being trained not to dash out the front door and get lost when company comes, and if they otherwise seem nervous with strangers in the house. I find it makes them feel much more secure, probably because the world is so big and they are so little. We've trained quite a few puppies through the years.

Our 14 y.o. cockapoo has remained quite small (under 10 pounds) throughout her life, and I have to admit a bit neurotic with situations she's not used to. When we would leave the house, I think it felt too huge and lonely for her; the crate was more manageable. For her, the crate stayed up in our kitchen for several years, and it functioned as her retreat, not some sort of punishment.

So I could say with a straight face that I "crate train" my dogs -- while they are puppies. We believe in access to the outdoors as much as possible.

The kittens were different because we got them from a shelter. While the shelter volunteers liked us and urged us to take the two crazy 5 month-old sisters, the only thing we didn't see eye to eye on was keeping them indoors 100% of the time. I really think that's rather cruel to cats, but I didn't argue much. I just didn't plan to do it.

They are in the house every single night without fail. (Except for the night Slinky Schizy-Cat ran off into the dusk because she was having too much fun, got beat up and disappeared for two days, almost breaking my heart. The time Fluffy Killer wouldn't come in I actually knew she'd be okay -- sure enough she was waiting the next morning with an extremely smug look on her face. They have polar-opposite natures.) It would have helped me understand the shelter volunteers' point of view better if they had told me what my vet's partner said when he treated Slinky after her mugging -- that she would be very susceptible to skin cancer because her nose and ears are pale pink, as are her sister's. So now I keep them in from mid-morning to mid-afternoon as well as overnight. They are not all that easy to catch, LOL, but I myself am pale pink so I understand skin cancer.

Best of luck with your new little purebred. But if you ever want to try again for a shelter-dog/rescue-dog, you might take the point of view that YOU are interviewing THEM (the shelter staff) as much as they are interviewing you. Sometimes "rescuers" find it hard to let go and let their charges move on.

Hekate

83. we adopted a rescued puppy mill pug 2 years ago -
living on a rural no fence property was an issue for them also. But... we managed to convince them that "Hank" would not have any opportunity to stray away and we have added a purebred AKC deaf sheltie (with the caveat that we would not breed her) to our family - Hank is her hearing ear dog and they are an absolute howl to watch. Find another shelter that is more reasonable and good luck!

It takes a while for a rescued animal to trust you completely, but once the switch trips, they're the most loyal and grateful companions you'll ever have.

I've adopted several rescued cats and rehabbed more to adopt out. While I'm loath to take on another animal who's likely to outlive me, if my situation were different, I'd certainly do it again.

"Raven" is a great name and I'm sure she'll grow into it beautifully.

. . . . . that have eyes that seem to tell you there's real intelligence in there.

That dog is such a dog.

You're going to look at her very soon and say aloud: "Who's in there?" And she'll give you a lick and turn away.

And she'll own you.

Natural Planet Organics dog food is my personal recommendation. I love the cat food.

I just had to go buy special certified organic food for my FOUR cats and ONE bearded-dragon lizard (who enjoys organic, locally-grown romaine lettuce and strawberries).:)

42. Raven's a real heart warmer -
I always tell our rescued beagle (actually my son's) - "Jes come snuggle with mama," and she jumps into bed...the commercial actually refers to a cat who is a raccoon, and my eyes are as bad as mama's since cataract adventures.

Good luck, I envy you because you're just starting out and will be busy being trained. Hope you're a good student.

The best part of rescue dogs is that they know you saved them and they become your loyal companion quickly.

Of all the dogs I had, the best were rescue dogs.

74. She looks very attached already.
At your beck and call. :)

My sister had a Basset Hound adopt her a few months ago. Missy, who scratched on her door in 4 below weather. After calling a number on her tag she discovered she'd had at least 2 homes before, and the last owner said she put her out of the car onto a busy street nearby. Now Missy pretty much won't let my sister out of her sight. She's so grateful to have a good home.

Any fans of No-Kill shelters -- Pepsi is giving away grants to charities and the Pet Food Bank & Wellness Fund of Jacksonville, FL is up to #11 but needs to get in the Top 10 by the end of the month to win a $25,000 grant. It would be great if DU could kick them up a notch!

http://www.refresheverything.com/petfoodbank

You can vote for a total of 10 charities a day to win different amounts of money. I'm not sure how long this contest goes on, but I believe the vote totals are carried over into the next month so losers will get another chance. I learned about Pepsi Refresh through a Best Friends Animal Society newsletter.

I have four - well, three rescues and one I "rescued" when I found it on the street in front of my house and no one claimed it after I put an ad in the paper.

Be prepared for some emotional problems, though. I have one that doesn't seem to have any (along with the personal rescue). Sometimes these poor babies were very mistreated and have stress issues. Love her, pet her and if she shows signs of emotional duress, take her to a professional so YOU can learn how to lead her "pack". (I sound like Cesar Milan. LOL!)

Have fun with that pretty girl and give her lots of pets and kisses from me and my four babies!

96. I LOVE Her Too! I Have Two Chocolate Labs... Shawnee & Dakota!
We have a program here that you can work at the local SPCA and get a VERY reduced cost for spaying & neutering! Dakota was neutered for $40.00!

I told them I would be GLAD to work for someone else's animal if they wanted to have them fixed, but the ownership/paperwork gets in the way1 I can volunteer all I want, but it would be GREAT if I could transfer my time to get other animals fixed.

We have a lot of feral cats in my neighborhood and even though I can help get them fixed, I then HAVE to have them released back in my area! That implementation doesn't solve problems for animals without homes and I already have 2 other cats!

Good luck with her, she will love you dearly and comfort you when you get "the blues!" And thank you for rescuing her, there are too many HOMELESS animals too AND they really have no way to PROTEST!

I found my dog Gigi beside a rode in Ga. where I was visiting my mom. It was Memorial Day and she was beside the state highway..I was on my bike and gave her some water from my water bottle cap - came back to get her in a car. The vet said she had strong heart worms, hadn't been spayed; but she was only two years old and got along with my pug Greta.

Now Gigi has graduated from basic obedience (valedictorian of her class I might add) and is working on her canine good citizenship test. She participates in agility and doggie drill team with the Greenbelt Dog Training Club. She is on the list to participate in Pets on Wheels.

We couldn't be happier- unless of course we had more room for adoptions. :hi:

No dog loves its owner like a rescue dog. I think they know they were miserable and in trouble and unloved before, and then the rescuer came along, and everything changed.

You are a good person to take in a rescue dog. Whatever you do the rest of your life, know that you have done at least one good thing. I would think this helps reserve spots for us in Heaven, don't you? At least I hope so, because that's where my other rescued pets went when they died, and I told them that I'd be there to be with them.
