Portrait of a (military) Sexual Assault
Portrait of a Sexual Assault
March 18, 2010
Air Force Print News|by A1C Jarad A. Denton

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. - "I tried to walk away but he was much bigger than me, and I had too much to drink," said an Airman who was sexually assaulted several years ago during a party at a friend's house.

The Airman, who asked not to be identified in this story to protect her privacy, said the assault didn't come from a stranger in a dark alley or a guy she had just met; it came from someone she knew - someone she considered a friend.

Shannon Holstein, the Ellsworth Air Force Base sexual assault response coordinator, said most sexual assaults occur between people who know each other, rather than strangers.

"My friends and I went out to dinner and then came back to his house for some drinks and poker," the Airman said. "One by one, everyone went to bed, including his wife."

Once everyone had gone to bed, except the Airman and her attacker, she decided to go to sleep on the couch. Her attacker cornered her, kissed her and forced her to touch him. She tried to fight back, but was unsuccessful.

3. Is it time to get heterosexuals out of the military?
The men don't seem capable of controlling themselves, and it appears that unit cohesion is seriously challenged by the presence of heterosexuals at the duty sites, in the barracks, at chow, and, well, everywhere.
