Calif. Lawmakers To Get 'Courage' Award

BOSTON (AP) ― Four California lawmakers who led a bipartisan effort to solve the state's budget crisis have been named to receive the annual John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

Former Senate Republican Leader Dave Cogdill, former Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines, former Democratic Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Democratic Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg will be presented with the awards at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston on May 24.

Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the late president, praised the legislative leaders for standing up to strong pressure from their own parties and constituents as they tried to negotiate a compromise to close California's huge budget gap.

Kennedy said she hoped their political courage would be an inspiration to other elected officials facing similar challenges
