50-foot 'Mission Accomplished?'banner unfurled in front of White House
At an event held in front of the White House grounds today, Americans United for Change and Americans Against Escalation in Iraq unfurled a version of the infamous "Mission Accomplished" banner, with one notable difference: Theirs ended with a question mark.

The "Mission Accomplished?" protest comes in advance of tomorrow's fourth anniversary of the speech President George Bush made on May 1, 2003 on the USS Abraham Lincoln to declare major combat operations in Iraq complete.

"In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed," Bush proclaimed during that 2003 speech, below a banner that read "Mission Accomplished."

But Brad Woodhouse of Americans United for Change disagrees. "Four years after President Bush said the war was over, four years after he stood before the banner 'Mission Accomplished' on the USS Abraham Lincoln and four years into a tortured and failed policy in Iraq – US forces are still caught in the crosshairs of a civil war with no end in sight."

That's if KKKarl let him look out the window today.

39. I'm so sorry, you are wrong.
War profiteers should not be taxed. What they are doing is against the law, they should be put in jail and all the money, property ect seized under the RICO Act. They fit the law to the letter, operating an "ongoing criminal enterprise."

But then the AWOL Chimp doesn't know the difference between 'battle', 'war', 'invasion' or 'occupation.'

He was hung over & absent the day they taught political science in PoliSci 101.

He got permanent military bases in Iraq. He got control of the oil. His cronies are making huge profits. He's bankrupting America, so that all those pesky "social" programs (social security, medicade, etc) can no longer be afforded.

Yes, his mission was accomlished. And his people in the know recognize that.

We will be there for the next twenty years. No president after Dumbya will want to upset the apple cart of oil acquisition. The American people will be furious when they have to pay five or six dollars a gallon and the profiteers will put out a hit on him or her.

50. That is Capt. Jonathan Powers
with the microphone in his hand, I heard he may be running for Congress against Reynolds in N.Y.

He also has an excellent post up at Huffington Post.

Mission Accomplished?

When President Bush landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln four years ago tomorrow, my soldiers and I were preparing ourselves to deploy into Baghdad. We listened intently to the speech he gave because he was our Commander in Chief and we were preparing to go into battle under his command.

My soldiers and I watched as our comrades blitzed their way to Baghdad and in a few short weeks toppled Saddam's regime, even tearing down the dictators statues along the way.

I was honored to be leading my platoon into a battle which I believed would both defend our nation and bring freedom to an oppressed people.

As the president stood in front of the now infamous Mission Accomplished banner and announced, "my fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed," a tremendous sense of pride filled my soul.

Our leader, the man standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier half way around the world, exuded so much confidence that my soldiers and I mentally prepared ourselves for a short six month stint in Iraq's capital. I was a believer!

"Now," the president said, "our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country." I understood this, but I began to question why only days before convoying to Baghdad we still did not have any idea what our mission was going to be. I searched out an infantry platoon sergeant to train my artillery men on basic tactics such as raiding houses or patrolling down streets. I still expected that our leader had a plan for us to execute. I may have questioned, but I was a believer.
