Gagging here: Linder's replacement. They're pushing John Smoltz, another wackjob
He was a Braves pitcher, now born-again pimp. From the AJC:

Within minutes of U.S. Rep. John Linder’s announcement that he won’t seek a 10th term in Congress, the phone began vibrating.

Late this afternoon, a Washington source called with this surprise: One of the people likely to approached as a candidate for Linder’s seat by Republicans will be former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz.

Smoltz has been paying down some dues in several Republican contests in Georgia over the last two years. He’s been part of a fund-raiser for U.S. Rep. Tom Price of Roswell, and if memory serves, he cut a robo-call for U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss in ‘08.

From Wikipedia: Smoltz met his first wife Dyan at the Omni Hotel in downtown Atlanta; the couple had four children before divorcing in 2007 after 16 years of marriage.<22> Smoltz lives in Alpharetta and also has a home at Sea Island, Georgia, a golf resort. On May 16, 2009, Smoltz married the former Kathryn Darden at his home with 70 friends and family in attendance. <23> Smoltz is a born-again Christian and is Chairman of the Board at Alpharetta-based King's Ridge Christian School, and a member of the Presbyterian Church in America. He has also been involved in the development of a new Christian school in the metropolitan Atlanta region.

Smoltz produced an automated campaign phone recording on behalf of the candidacy of Ralph E. Reed, Jr. for Lt. Governor of Georgia during the 2006 primary.<27>

18. Who said anything about denying anyone office?
Far-right fundamentalists have poor track record of not being trustworthy, that's the point of what I was saying.

19. I am a Christian. A born again is not really the same thing as an everyday
Edited on Sat Feb-27-10 08:17 PM by Jennicut
Lutheran, which is what I am. I have been to many born again churches, as my husband is a church organist. They are usually VERY conservative. Not always, I will grant you that. But most of the time a very big difference. People who use faith to take rights away from others don't make good politicians. They are allowed to run but mix politics with religion and hate the separation between church and state.

23. A majority of them can't
They attempt to impose their "faith" on the office thereby overriding their duty to the oath of office that they take to uphold the Constitution.

13. Forgot to add this charming Smoltz quote:
From the AP:

Smoltz was interviewed for an Associated Press article published on July 3, 2004 that dealt with the issue of homophobia in professional sports. “Smoltz, a devout Christian, criticized those who want to legalize gay marriage,” the AP reported. “‘What’s next? Marrying an animal?’ he asked derisively.”

20. Jocks in politics
most of them are elected because of their feats in sports, too many of them are just window dressing, doing what they are told to do,not a clue about politics.Jim Bunning is a prime example of a jock out of his or her field.

21. Ohmigod. He was traded by my Tigers for Doyle Alexander. First Bunning, now this.
So sorry to hear of this, I thought Smoltz was a sentient being. Guess I was wrong. Like most overpaid athletes, he is a Repukelican.
