I work a half a day in each of 2 different schools. One school has never made AYP.

If all of the teachers are fired, would I only be half fired?

The counselor in one school is there 2 days a week. Would she be 40% fired?

Can you draw half unemployment? 40%?

Not that it matters but I got a near perfect score on my evaluation this year. What difference would that make if they fired the entire staff?

All teachers fired at R.I. school. Will that happen elsewhere?

2. Time now for those teachers to hold a union meeting...
vote for a walkout strike and then walk until the school board meets with the union to discuss the contract and new proposals.

Let the school admin attempt to fill the classrooms for the last semester.

Pretty difficult to fill 70 classrooms overnight. Scabs maybe.

3. This is what the future is going to be for many school districts
Find some reason to get pissed at the teachers, make unreasonable demands, and when the teachers don't comply, fire all of them and replace them with cheaper, younger, less educated and less experienced teachers.

And another generation will go down the drain.

4. Please, what is AYP?
I read the article and it wasn't clear to me, but it was more than a little chilling to see that the American Enterprise Institute was mentioned.

5. Annual Yearly Progress
This was implemented as a part of No (Rich) Child Left Behind Act.

9. ADEQUATE Yearly Progress
Not trying to sound petty but it does give it a different meaning. :hi:

7. I think what is happening in this country to education is a national disgrace.
Right now we have Christie here in New Jersey - a follower of "something for nothing" Reagan - who helped drop California's public schools from number one in the United States to number 46 - trying to destroy our schools, now ranked nationally number 6.

Look out Alabama, we're heading your way!

Our teachers are our most precious investment in our nation's future, and they certainly deserve more status than bankers, stockbrokers and other paper shufflers.

11. It's been going on for at least 3 decades now
This is the culmination of a very successful smear campaign against our public schools.

12. Everyone at our local school is walking around in terror.
They are sending out RIF(Reduction in Force) notices and nobody is certain who is and isn't going to get the axe.

13. You know how long it's been since I had a student teacher?
Almost 10 years I think. The university professors used to come and visit and hand pick cooperating teachers. They had more students than they could place. But as NCLB has taken hold, teaching is a far less attractive profession. And I can't remember the last time the university folks came through looking for teachers willing to take a student teacher.

So good luck to any school that fires the entire staff and looks for replacements.
