Heads Exploding... it's a scientific fact...
>snip> Exploding head syndrome is said to happen more often after the age of 50 (although there have been reports of it happening in children) and believed to be more common among women.<snip<

LOL.... I believe they forgot to mention freeperland having a higher incidence of the phenomenon.

1. Had this happen a few times
For me it's an intense BZZZZEEEEOOOOOORRRRP! like the noise you'd think a slow-motion electrical arc would make

4. I've experienced this phenomenon several times in my life
My 'explosions' sound like a 12-gauge shotgun being fired in close proximity to my head...ker-fucking-BOOM!!! It happened so infrequently that it didn't concern me greatly, and I was always cognizant of having dreamed the event, so it never occurred to me to mention it to a doctor. Typically, it occurs shortly after falling asleep. In retrospect, it's probably been five years or more than I've experienced an 'explosion'; I don't miss them at all.

7. I have too!
When it happens to me, I also see like a stark white flash of light, while my eyes are closed. I always wake up and wonder if something really happened or if I dreamed it, and after several minutes of listening for any evidence of a disturbance or movement in the house, I go back to sleep. I've probably experienced it once or twice a year for about the past 10 years.

10. Thanks for your sharing....
Read my reply to Cirque du So-What.

When I have heard the buzzing noise.. a deep sense of fear seems to accompany the experience. I have a sense of relief to wake up and go on with my day.

But I haven't had it happen in almost ten years now and it has only happened a few time in my life.

so that doesn't go along with the article, since it indicates that over middle age it becomes more common and I am 54.

12. What is funny is that I sometimes "brush off" something that REALLY happens
because I assume it is the "dream explosion." I lived with my mom for the last year of her life, and at least twice, I experienced what I thought was just another one of those "dreams," but the next morning, my mom said, "Did you hear someone bang really hard on the front door? I was about to holler for you but they didn't do it again, so I went back to sleep."

Maybe she and I just had a shared "head explosion"? LOL

Mine started when I was about 30 and I have had a couple or so a year since.

I didn't really have a sense of fear. It was more confusion of not knowing if something had really happened or not. My heart would be pounding, but it was more like I was startled by the sound itself, than fear of what may have caused it.

13. I have to say... an interesting topic....
One that I would have never thought about had it not been for the article I found.

Good Luck the rest of the way....! and I hope they stop at sometime in your life.

9. I find it very interesting...

I had never heard of anything like this. However, I have woke up in the middle of the night hearing a VERY loud buzzing in my head.... I mean 70 to 80 decibels.

It only has happened a few times in my life... I would eventually fall back to sleep. I have really never thought about it too much. I wonder if it's something similar.

Thanks for sharing..:-)

5. Pompei.
The pyroclastic flow actually caused the contents of the skulls of the living to heat up and boil so quickly that their heads exploded. They would have been dead for a second or two beforehand, of course.

Wierd, but I'm used to it. It's not so uncommon.
