My daughter was instrumental in bringing into existence The Gay-Straight Alliance at Mayfair High
in Lakewood, CA. Up until today, there hasn't been such a club at Mayfair. She's been working behind the scenes since the beginning of the school year. Today her hopes and dreams came to fruition. How cool is that? She just called me and described their meeting.

She was to be the Secretary of the club. Today was their VERY FIRST MEETING, and there were over 30 students in attendance!

Before the meeting, she had informed the President that she wanted to give up her position as Secretary because all of the officers were Seniors and she wanted the club to have some continuity for the next year. The President was so taken that she introduced my Allison this afternoon as CO-President.

She said that the ratio of gays to straights was almost 1 to 1!

I am so fucking proud of her. Some may remember my posting during the Christmas season of 08 when she came out to me.

She's not only proudly out of the closet, she's out of da house!

3. Oh don't I know it.
Since coming out, she's a COMPLETELY different and MUCH HAPPIER person. Not to mention; she's finally enjoying school. She's the smartest 18 year old I know, and her communication skills are impeccable. She'll have to go to Community College before transferring to uni but the way she's performing in school finally, I won't hesitate to sacrifice so she can go to whatever school she picks when transfer time comes.

She's my baby, and she's all grown up now.

18. Sounds like a healthy relationship that ...
millions of GLBT never had with their parents. I'm hoping that this generation will be the first to truly embody equality, regardless of who they are.

Very cool story, thanks for sharing.

5. Strong, and Brave.
We were trading text messages a year ago this Christmas, and she texted that she had something to tell me. I texted her that she could tell me ANYTHING, and that she knew it. A long pause ensued. Ten minutes or more. If you've seen youngsters text, you know the pause wasn't because she was typing...

Finally, my phone beeped and the text message said simply: "I'm gay." Soooo.... I hesitated (simply for effect) for a few minutes before I texted her back and said: "Is that all? I thought you were going to tell me something like you had just dropped out of school. I'm SO relieved."

6. She never ceases to amaze me.
And since coming out last year, her whole life has changed; she's MUCH happier and MUCH more self-confident. It's like she's a totally different person.

When we hung up after describing her meeting today, we were BOTH misty.

I be lucky.

8. I keep pushing her toward the helm, she keeps telling me she wants to work in the background.
I want her to be famous, she wants to be anonymous.

12. Sometimes the background people can get stuff done much easier
People in the foreground sometimes can't do the work they really want because there are too many eyes upon them.

There really isn't anything wrong with being anonymous. Sometimes not being seen is the best.

11. How wonderful!
Congrats all around!

She and you!

Very savvy and in looking toward the future of the org clearly showed her values were in the right place.

Every parent hopes their kids do a bit more in furthering whatever they regard as worthwhile. Call me lucky. Firstborn got lots of academic honors and such, but more importantly became a LGBT activist who successfully fought Dworkin against her attempts to exclude the 'T" and at the same time built the fist gay pride celebration in Philly thast included the black community as well as the college and city.

More about her (now he, married with two kids) to cheer since then, but it sure sounds that your kid is going to give you post (and boast, with good reason) more news.

15. That is wonderful. Any chance she might write about the experience so other young adults
who are interested might be inspired?

I'd also love to hear more about it and hear her perspective.

Great story.
