I would have no problem paying one more cent if the money went toward schools and public services. We had a 1 cent tax in our city for a specific amount of time for a specific purpose. It lasted 3 years, achieved what it was intended to do and then the tax went away. I did not notice when I was paying it nor do I notice not paying it now.

With many states struggling, would this be a viable solution?

1. I don't support regressive taxes/flat taxes.
They always disproportionately affect those who can least afford to pay them.

Sales taxes are the perfect example of regressive taxes
they cost the poor a higher percentage of their income than the rich.

3. That same argument was made when our city proposed that tax
for our Arena.

We are far from wealthy, but I did not notice the extra penny on the dollar when I bought things. I do notice the extra 55 cents per gallon of gas or 75 cents per pac of Cigs.

5. I like the extra 1% property tax on the top 1/3 of real estate..
Let Bush's base (the haves and the have-mores) pay some more taxes instead of those who are struggling to survive.

2. How about a 1% property tax on the top one-third most valuable
properties in your state or anyone's state. I bet it would help a lot.

16. It makes the most sense, but sadly, most office holders are pretty wealthy themselves.
They would be less likely to impose such a tax compared to a legislature made up of working class people.

21. Most State Legislators Are Wealthy Too
Most candidates have to self fund...meaning having 10 or 50 or 100 grand to spend on a campaign. That's not quite "lunch pail" common folk kinda money.

7. No! Our lawmakers will just waste the extra money yet again.
In some areas of California sales tax is 10 percent and the state is still BROKE. When I visited the local DMV office monday they had 1 person taking people for their driving tests and a line of 15 cars!

10. Sales taxes are among the most regressive tax schemes available.
I'm a proud Oregonian and we believe in raising taxes on the higher income brackets and on corporations.
I would also favor an increase in capital gains and inheritance taxes.

12. They'll just spend even more money than gets collected and come back wanting more
Government needs to learn to live within it's means, it will just get worse if it doesn't.

20.  tax surcharge on alcohol
This could raise billions, people drink a lot in this country so put a big tax on the alcohol.

And also anyone making over a million dollars, raise the federal tax to 50% rate.
