Smelly passenger kicked off flight
http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/02/18/smelly.passenger/index.html?hpt=Sbin

(CNN) -- Air travelers already have to deal with unruly passengers, excessively talkative ones and many other types who make flying miserable.

But a new low may just have been reached for weary road warriors: The overwhelmingly smelly passenger.

A man on Jazz Air, a regional airline in Canada that also serves U.S. cities, was reportedly kicked off a plane earlier this month because of his strong body odor.

"People were just mumbling and staring at him," said a woman who sat near the man, according to The Guardian, a newspaper in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, where the flight originated on February 6. It was a very uncomfortable situation, she added.

Another passenger described the smell as "brutal."

Jazz Air spokeswoman Manon Stuart confirmed that a passenger was "deplaned" from the flight, but she could not provide specific information about the person involved or the reason why he was asked to leave because of privacy issues.

Hmmm. I don't think I would want to sit through a flight doing this --> :puke:

What could he have digging out of his nose for 2 hours? People can be really disgusting.

who hasn't washed thier hands afer using the restroom ? Don't mind having a handfull of thier business ?

What if someone shit thier pants and sat next to you, as long as he shits all over himself it dosn't affect you right ? Where do you draw the line ? Personal hygene is a pretty reasonable expectation, it's not "prudery", I hope you're joking.

Dirty, smelly people are offensive and I don't blame the other passengers one bit.

"i can't believe how prissy some people can be about OTHER people's business."

It's one thing to do it in private, it's another to put it on public display. Once on display it becomes also my business.

I see you like to use the "failed at logic" canard. People who like to use that tactic, usually fail at it themselves.

Pick away, it appears as if you think that's perfectly okay while in public.

78. Imagine if it is a 4 hour plane ride?
You know, and I say this seriously, people often may not know they smell. Your senses desensitize you to your own body odor. And in our society people will usually stay quiet and mock behind the scenes, instead of talking to them (sensitively). So that could be a wake up call that he needs.

But either way, sorry, I disagree with your premise. If they are overweight there is nothing that can be done. But if they have serious body odor then they can easily take a shower and hit the next plane.

85. The difference, for me, is that...
a fat person or one with acne is dealing with something on the outside that he or she can't immediately do anything about, if ever.

Somebody who goes into their body and drags out their own bodily fluids (even if they're solid or clotted or whatever) and flings them on the floor doesn't have to do it.

If they're in their own car at a stoplight, OK. It's their territory. There's a few feet of space and several inches of metal between yourself and that person. And they'll be gone within 90 seconds.

But two hours right next to someone who clearly doesn't respect others?

My God...if there's a nasal issue, go in the bathroom and take care of it. Use a handkerchief or tissue.

The only consolation in all of this is that the rude nose-picker might be stupidly setting himself up to catch something nasty by having his finger in his nose all the time. Who knows what's lurking on the seats and armrests and door handles, etc. that he's maybe picked up on his fingers and is transferring to his own nose.

we are talking about people PICKING THEIR NOSES. Not nursing mothers, which is completely normal, and to me, completely natural.

If you can not understand social norms and societal convention, you are a lost cause.

86. Actually, I think public grooming might be a great idea...
Imagine a plane load of people picking their noses, cleaning wax from their ears, clipping nose hairs and toenails, shaving their legs, men spraying for jock itch...and...for the women...changing their sanitary products right there in the seats...

Bus stations and shopping malls would be a lot more interesting, too, I'll bet...

When I fly long flights I always try to bring along cough lozenges. Not for myself, but for the inevitable person who is exposing everyone to their flu with constant coughing.

The easiest way to deal with it is to go to them and offer them some lozenges (politely), or alternatively give them to the stewardess to offer to them. You would be surprised, as the offender often actually appreciate its and is glad to get them. People often don't bring what they need on a flight when they have a cold.

42. Oh yes, it is.
I recall on a recent little excursion, when I got on the bus, (which is usually not that crowded) was packed, that is until I made it through the crowd to the mid point. No more crowd. "odd", I thought, then it hit me. Hit me like a brick in the face at close range. One innocent soul sitting alone in the back of the bus. Innocent yes, but quite noxious to say the very least. I got the knowing looks from the other passengers as I worked my way back up to the front to get away from the smell. It became a game after that. The look of relief of those who got off and the same look of disgusted surprise by those who ventured beyond the midpoint.

Ahhh bus life, it's never dull.

49. Actually, they do. I've been on three trains where passengers were removed
after others complained. Two individuals reeked of body odor, got on the train in Tacoma and were removed in Olympia. One other who reeked of booze both fresh and stale had gotten on in Seattle and was removed in Tacoma.

In all three instances train staff were deeply apologetic to other passengers expressing regret that we had been subjected to the "nasal assault" as long as we had.

just kidding...but I sleep on just about every flight and usually through the whole thing if I can. I woke up at the end of one flight and the woman next to me had also slept and at some point during the flight she snuggled up close (hard her arm through mine and her head on my shoulder). When the lights came on and we woke I felt her tense up as if she didn't know what to do...funny stuff happens when you sleep on a plane...

Proposal to ban smelly people from buses causes a stink
US civil rights group believes the 14th amendment of the constitution may protect the smelly.
By Emma Hartley
Published: 9:28AM BST 07 Sep 2009

Honolulu city council has gone back to the drawing board after a proposal to ban smelly people from its buses proved unworkable.

The Hawaiian council had considered making it illegal to have “odors that unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system”.

Had it passed into law, anyone convicted of being smelly could have been fined up to $500 and given a six-month jail term.

But lawyers from the city and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said it was vaguely worded, would result in subjective judgments being made and may even have been unconstitutional...

I had to confront my senior citizen parents about this problem, and I got a lot of anger and being cut off from communication for four months. This was despite apologizing immediately after I saw their reaction. I never said I didn't mean it, just that I was sorry for the way I had said it. Eventually I had to take all the steps to re-establish the relationship again, cause saying they're sorry isn't something they do.

There was some good that came out of it. They have begun to be more careful about hygiene when they come to visit me. But I think they think I'm extra weird about it or something--couldn't really be their problem!

47. For some people body odor is a medical problem, not mental
Though it can be treated, people can be unaware. A friend of Mr. csziggy's is like that - he just cannot get it through his head that he smells. He showers every day, brushes his teeth, sees his doctor and dentist regularly, but he smells. It is hard to spend time with him in a closed room.

Since he is a right wing nut, I use his political views as an excuse to not spend time around him. The crowd of guys make comments but they just cannot make an impression on him.

89. Another good point...there's a condition called
Trimethylaminuria.

"Fish odor disease"

I have a mild form of it myself, that's how I know about it.

If I eat seafood, mainly, my urine smells evil for about a day and a half. And, being older, I have a bit of incontinence, so it's possible for me to really stink when my urine leaks. I have to change underwear a couple of times a day and/or wear a pad, although a pad gives me horrible rashes and blisters.

It doesn't come out in my sweat, thank goodness...the more severe cases actually have that happen. People can really smell like rotting fish after eating certain foods.

I only know one other person who has this.

88. Very true! There's this woman I see occasionally
down in the "Big city" shopping in the local Walgreens.

No matter what day, the time of year...

She's always wearing the same pair of light cotton blue/green pants with a HUGE pee stain on the back. I mean, it goes right down to her knees. And, of course, she smells hideous.

I often wonder if she has family or anybody who cares or even knows that she's walking around like this every day...

passenger in front of us had the worst gas I have ever been exposed to. Hang time was amazing and it went on the entire flight. We did not want to say anything but my husband finally could take it no longer and pulled out his can of deodorant and sprayed it around occasionally. It did kind of help if you like the smell of Right Guard. It was a long time ago, many flights since but if anyone ever asks us about our worst flight that is the one we both remember.

The German people burp and fart in public all the time, trains included, generally at eating time. Ya, it seems a little much, but so does our prissyness. We are a little too "sanitary" because of our advertising has whitewashed us. Just look at the white teeth thing. Most of the world has slightly yellow teeth. No big deal.

Edited on Fri Feb-19-10 01:52 PM by HughBeaumont
. . . As soon as I got on the thing, I got PUNCHED in the face by her stench. Imagine a non-deodorized urinal cake from a 2:00 AM Bar right under your nose. That's . . . yeah. Now imagine the whole bus smelling like this for 34 minutes. People were pissed (NPI) and some were even half-gagging.

To make matters worse, once the bus stopped (and you could imagine people were in a massive rush to get off this thing), piss chick stops and talks to the driver for 3 minutes wanting to know what bus she's on, blocking everyone behind her.

UNbelievable.

62. smelly people
I work at an airport and you would be shocked at the disgusting amount of people that we see. One guy took his stuff out of his liquid bag at the security checkpoint and roaches by the hundreds came out on the table. They called us after all the people in line freaked that his bag was going on the plane in the overhead. We took his bag, wrapped it in plastic bags and made him check it not carry it on board and place in the overhead. You get people that you know are sick with pink eye, coughing and hacking, just don't bath, certain ethnic groups eat a lot of certain spices and that can be as bad as not bathing for some people. Smelly pets also. I was on a crammed flight getting out of Philly before the big snow storm and asked the guy next to me if the horrible smell that would come in waves was the lav behind us, he said oh no, that is my baby tooting. I asked him what the hell he was feeding that child...

And she has a kid in her class that has a smell problem. All the kids in class don't want to sit near him and they tease him. She has spoken with him a couple of times and he says that he take baths. Finally she brough it up to the nurse and the nurse talked to him but nothing changed. The nurse went to the school counselor and decided to contact the parents. All the mother said was she sees to it that they bath everyday. That was it. I think she needs to take her son to the doctor.

Body odor is much more intrusive than most disturbances -- especially in a confined space.

And extreme body odor has a tendency to seep into other people's clothes, adding an extra component to the suffering.

95. True Story. I know this vegan who actually believes showering every day is wasting water.
And he and I used to work in a count room together and I was his boss. He stank like all hell! He would ride his bike to work in 100 degree heat and then not shower for days. He would actually say that he doesn't need to and its wasteful. I would tell him to his face that he smells like Bigfoot's soiled underwear but he wouldn't believe me. The next day I bought a bottle of Febreeze and made him stand still while I sprayed him down. It was either that or I was going to fire him.

I'm not talking about sweaty armpits, or stale smoke, or stale beer, or anything on that level...

I'm talking about that rare person who smells of feces and vomit and piss who probably hasn't bathed in 2 months. Thankfully they are rare, but, IMO, they should get fined by police for being a public nuisance. Stinking up a plane should be strictly forbidden!

102. Years ago, the Morristown, NJ library tried to kick out...
a homeless man who loved to read and spent all day in the place. Problem was, didn't like bathing much, or had no place to bathe, so he really stunk the place up. And he was wierd-- freaking out other patrons.

Well, he sued. And won. Morristown had to let him spend as much time in the library as he wanted.

Until the appeal-- a Federal appeals court threw out the judgment and let the library throw out Richard Keimer and anyone else who freaked out the other patrons. How often do you hear Federal judges say "Let's be reasonable here"?

http://www.nytimes.com/1992/03/28/opinion/library-hygiene-in-morristown.html?pagewanted=1

(One of those times I thought the ACLU should have let it go.)

116. There was a guy who used to ride the buses in my area of my city
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 08:59 PM by distantearlywarning
Everybody who used public transportation knew about him - we used to call him "pee man".

I don't know if he was homeless and had no access to bathing or what, but he emitted the foulest odor I've ever smelled from a human being in my life. You could smell it the second he stepped through the bus doors, even if you were sitting all the way in the back.

It smelled like a combination of month-old urine and cheap gas station air freshener. It was absolutely nauseating.

More than once I was on a bus he entered where literally every single other passenger got off at the next stop. I once sat through my entire ride with him on the bus (it was cold and snowing so I decided to take my chances with the stench), and I literally felt sick by the time the ride ended. And maybe it was my imagination, but it seemed like I could smell him on my clothes and hair the whole rest of the day. :puke:

I felt sorry for him, because there was obviously something very very wrong in his life, but damn... his odor inconvienced and sickened dozens of bus riders daily.

I stopped seeing him around about a year ago. I always wondered if the transit authority eventually banned him or something.
