Al Gore slams Exxon’s ‘lies’ as advocates seek to regain momentum

Al Gore used Twitter Thursday to allege that oil giant Exxon Mobil has lied about its commitment not to fund organizations that dispute the science behind global warming.

“No surprise. Exxon lies about pledge not to fund climate deniers,” the former vice president tweeted.

Gore, on his website, called attention to Exxon’s 2007 pledge to “discontinue contributions to several public policy research groups whose positions on climate change could divert attention from the important discussion on how the world will secure the energy required for economic growth in an environmentally responsible manner.”

Gore, however, cited a story this month in the UK’s Independent that described Exxon's funding of such groups.
