The People Bitchin' About the Family Guy DS Episode Are Uninformed!!!!!
Edited on Tue Feb-16-10 07:07 PM by romantico
Love Family Guy or Hate it, this episode DOES NOT MOCK THOSE WITH DOWN SYNDROME!!! Chris falls for a girl who he thinks is nice and beautiful. The girl happens to have DS and is a total bitch. The point he makes at the end is I liked you because I thought you were different but you are just like the rest of us assholes. Again, how is that mocking DS? Oh, and the girl who vocied the character of the girl with down syndrome REALLY IS A GIRL WITH DOWN SYNDROME! I am hoping she speaks out about this. If Sarah Palin was not mentioned in the episode no one would be saying squat. Those bitching who refuse to watch the episode are no better than Sarah Palin because you don't know what you are talking about. If you hate the show, fine. However, watch the epsidoe so you can see HOW WRONG YOU ARE ABOU THIS ONE INCIDENT!

Accordingto Sarah, this should be considered satire,ya know the same thing Rush Limbaugh does. She is OK with his use of the R word (and Rush Limabugh and Karl ROve will be appearing on Family Guy this season. Curious to hear what El Rushbo has to say about this)

People are bitching because of the misleading title the OP at Huffpost posted, which I started a thread on by the way.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=7718017

Here is what I wrote in that post.

"That's why I said the title is a bit misleading because they in no way mock the disabled but more Sarah Palin. The girl with down syndrome is the bully and Chris even says in the end you are just like the rest of us A-holes. How is comparing someone with down syndrome as being just like us mocking them? I think if people actually saw the clip rather than respond to the what the OP at Huffpost wrote would clearly see they are wrong being offended at the character. I see it different. I see Chris finding the girl with down syndrome pretty and wanting to ask her out s being anything but mocking the disabled. If you don't like Family Guy or get the humor, that's fine. It's clearly not for everyone. However,to attack Family Guy for creating a character who has down syndrome who acts like the rest of us is just not true. I suggest everyone to watch the clip before making any final decision. Or better yet, watch the entire episode to see how this character with DS is portrayed. Some of the comments to the OP at Huffpost are saying the same thing. The title is misleading. I would change it but I want people to see the clip and judge for themselves"

So, watch the episode and explain to me how this DS girl is being mocked? Family Guy,like SOuth Park, mocks, gays, blacks, Asians, Jews, Scientologist,Catholics, liberals, conservatives and just about everyone else. No one is off limits. Watch the episode.

1. The kid with DS in the family guy episode
Comes across stronger than Chris.

I love FG, my only problem with this episode is that they ripped off the Simpsons again, with Joe saying we are looking for corspes.

2. I don't like this quote:
"So, watch the episode and explain to me how this DS girl is being mocked? Family Guy,like SOuth Park, mocks, gays, blacks, Asians, Jews, Scientologist,Catholics, liberals, conservatives and just about everyone else."

The way that's written, it sounds like as long as you insult everyone, you get a free pass on racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry.

40. "overly sensitive" is a matter of perspective
It's the same argument that was used against blacks in the 1960s and gays today.

I'm sure "Amos & Andy" was once acceptable, but it ain't today.

there are only a couple of lines that could be considered 'mocking' of her down's syndrome, and they aren't even that inflammatory.

35. I did
I did not see it as mocking. Overly sensitive people I suppose see what they want. Were you outraged over the episode where they mocked deaf people? Stroke victims? Gay people? African Americans? I keep asking an no one can answer me, what part of Chris asking a DS girl out because she is pretty and nice do you find offensive? Are you aware the actress playing the part has DS herself? Did you watch the entire episode? Are you a FG fan? If not, why even comment on the subject? Just asking

41. You can frame others any way to wish to try to make your point.
If you have to ask me over and over about the episode, you're not paying attention to my answers and my time spent talking to you is worthless.

And if you didn't see the reasoning behind Chris asking her out as a set up...then you're an idiot too.

Chris asking her out was not a set up. Did you even watch it? ANyone who did could easily tell, he asked her out because he thought she was beautiful and nice. So, you have no clue what you are talking about and you pretty much proved my point that people complaining have not seen it nor do they know what they are talking about.Sarah Palin would call you a Good American!

31. I've watched almost every episode
and yes I did watch it Sunday. I realize they make fun of everything. As does South Park. Parts of both shows are funny in spite of some of the material, like most shows of the sort.

Chris asking her out isn't making fun. I actually thought that was a nice beginning...it just went downhill.

Ellen, the character with Down syndrome, was voiced by Andrea Fay Friedman, an actress who has Down syndrome.

http://www.patriciaebauer.com/2010/02/16/palin-fires-back-at-family-guy-28120/

Again, if you are too sensitive to find humor in any minority or group than you should stay away from Family Guy and South Park and commenting on something you stay away from and do not watch seems rather pointless.

I guess Mel Brooks and his movies must fall into the same group as this. You must have HATED Blazing Saddles!

Some people take ownership in their relationships, so making phony claims about others "dissing" DS is just them staking their claim to one of the most reliable voting blocks there is, Special Needs.

Now, who out there is a demonstrable phony?

25. Re complaining about FG: It's tantamount to complaining that dogs have 4 legs.
FG is not Mr. Rogers and anyone who things it should be has no ground, because, as you have pointed out, they just hate FG.

It's like saying Dilbert should be the Family Circle, or Mark Twain should be Billy Graham.

Satire is satire, not a Sunday sermon. If it's not your cup of tea, don't drink it.

But I'm sure she's glad that all the Internet Outrage Warriors are out there protecting her from the big bad world, since she's all delicate and completely incapable of making her own decisions and defending herself. 30. If I were her, I'd find my "defenders" incredibly patronizing.
I thought the episode did a great job of showing her to be an actual (albeit unpleasant) person. Better than the Forrest Gump/Corky crap where everyone with a mental disability is a sweet, gentle caricature of themselves.

And the larger point that is lost in all of this is that FG was simply trying to get a reaction out of Palin with that one little crack, and of course, they got it.

47. Or what about on the Cleveland show on Sunday
When Cleveland helped one of his neighbors bury his mother's body (or so he thought) and the killer's car had a McCain/Palin bumper sticker on it.

I would think that would be more "offensive" to the Moosealini fans than the Family Guy episode which, in fact didn't actually mention her at all. The girl said her mother was "the former governor of Alaska". Now the implications, of course, are obvious. But Palin's NAME was not mentioned, contrary to the allegations being made in the corporate media.

Sarah and Bristol Palin Should be Grateful to 'The Family Guy'

OK, Sarah Palin. I cheered you on when you reamed Rahm Emanuel and to some extent Rush Limbaugh for using the "r" word. It's derogatory to handicapped people, to be sure. But your knee-jerk reaction to the recent "Family Guy" episode is just plain sad -- and completely misguided.

I'm the mom of a kid with special needs; my little boy, Max, has cerebral palsy. You must know how hard it can be to get people to see past your child's disabilities. People look at Max -- a kid who's funny, charming and really bright -- and typically only notice his inability to talk, his unsteady gait, the drool that occasionally trickles out of his mouth. Some adults are wary of him. Some kids are curious; others say things like, "What's wrong with him?" But one thing's consistently true for both adults and kids: They consider my son someone who's very different than they are. They see him as being an "other."

So when I watched that "Family Guy" show you've pilloried, here's what I saw: I saw little Stewie respond to Ellen, the girl with Down syndrome, in the same way that people respond to my son. When he remarked, "There's something up with her!" I thought, BRILLIANT! I want people to hear just how they sound when they make remarks like that.

Later on, when Chris gets frustrated with Ellen because she's pulling a diva act and shouts, "You know, I used to hear that people with Down syndrome were different than the rest of us. But you're not! You're not different at all! You're just a bunch of like everyone else!" I nearly stood up and applauded."
