You really need to wonder about some job titles
At http://www.ncesc1.com/individual/jis/jobDetail.asp?JobOrder=NC3541101 you can find a job posting for a "Case Manager, Homeless."

Must have a bachelor's degree.
Must have a year's experience.
Will earn $8.50 per hour.

Now about that comma. Is this a "Case Manager FOR THE Homeless" or a "Case Manager WHO IS Homeless"? Kinda hard to live on $8.50 per hour when you're paying off your student loans, guys.

1. I'm astonished at the pay scale. A starting position in my community
requires an associates degree in human services and pays $12-$15/hour. Positions requiring a bachelors degree start at $15-$18.

2. Our son who's a junior in high school
makes more than that bagging groceries. WTH is with companies demanding so much and paying so little? They should go eff themselves!

3. A few months ago I saw my old $80k/year job advertised at $10/hr.
$10/hr is an insult for professional IT work.

6. $8.50 per hour?
A person can make 3 times that mowing lawns in my neighborhood.

8. I note the North Carolina job listing. Typical here.
Most listings in my corner of North Carolina are similarly low pay, especially relative to responsibilities required.

I get 2 shifts a week at a local hotel. Earn a bit less per hour than when I did the same job at a hotel in Florida two careers and 30 years ago. Nevertheless, the guvmint can't list me as "unemployed."

12. But, on the other hand, the cost of living in North Carolina and
the surrounding states is less.

$8.50 per hour is like making $12 in New York.

9. Figures.
Reminds me of the job listing I found that said "Pay will be commiserate with experience." I thought "I bet it will."

10. $8.50 WITH a BA degree?
Wow. That is bad. I made that being a camp counselor at a summer camp when I was a teenager.

11. It's clearly for a case manager dealing with the homeless, but ...
the pay suggests that the case manager will her/himself be homeless if depending only on that job for pay.
