Evan Bayh Quits
Tweet Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon Yahoo! Buzz By David Weigel 2/15/10 11:31 AM

Indiana’s Democratic senator announces that he won’t seek re-election despite raising $13 million for the contest and leaving his party four days to find a replacement — which creates a similar problem in the districts of congressmen tipped as replacement candidates, like Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) and Rep. Baron Hill (D-Ind.).

Here are two measures of what a surprise this is. One: Ken Spain, spokesman for the NRCC, simply tweets “unreal” as he begins a series of observations about what this means for Democrats. Two: a Democratic strategist confirms to me that Bayh didn’t let anyone at any level of the party know about this, and shares with me an expletive I won’t share about the man himself.

Tom Jensen of Public Policy Polling comments that more bad news like this could throw the Senate to the GOP. It’s not so much that Bayh is gone — he clearly had a glass jaw, and Democrats may find a credible candidate to hold the seat against the deeply flawed former Sen. Dan Coats (D-Ind.). It’s more that nothing is breaking the Democrats’ way.

I wish him all the ill luck in the world in his future endeavors.

Abrupt decisions of this nature often indicate personal or financial problems are about to be revealed.

into the race, which makes him Benedict Bayh.

7. I'm not surprised. My problem with Bayh has never been his politics -
you have to be realistic about who you can elect in conservative states - but his repeated overeagerness to publicly undermine the party (like Lieberman before his primary loss). Honestly, I'd vote for a straight up conservative Democrat like Ben Nelson in a presidential primary before I'd ever vote for a snake like Bayh - I may not agree with a Nelson but at least you can trust him.

25. Exactly...
I'd rater have an earnest person that I disagree with 45% of the time than a weasel that I disagree with 30% of the time. With an honest person, you can trust them to to the honorable thing, but with a weasel like Bayh, you never know when that knife is toing to be stuck into your back until it's too late.

This makes no sense in that Bayh was actively campaigning for the lection LAST WEEK! There is something else happening here.

12. I agree. Just heard on MSNBC that he didn't even tell the party leaders
about his decision and they are learning it today. Also said that his reason is he is sick of partisan politics in DC and gave a similar reason for leaving as Palin did for leaving her offic in Alaska--he could be more effective from the outside. This smells.

31. Apt description of Bayh - "glass jaw"
He's spineless, insular and money-corrupted.

It may not bode well for the Dems in Indiana but I can't say I'm sorry this useless asshole will be gone. He can let the door hit him on the ass on the way out.

34. "Throw the Senate to the GOP" Who does he think has been controlling the Senate the last year!?
Edited on Mon Feb-15-10 08:38 PM by Kablooie
The GOP are getting what they want consistently by killing everything.
They are tremendously successful while the Democratic majority doesn't seem to even be trying to stop them.

The Senate has been the property of the GOP ever since the Democrats became the super majority.
