RI Democratic Party head runs for Kennedy's seat
By Ray Henry
Associated Press Writer / February 13, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The former chairman of Rhode Island's Democratic Party has announced he will run for Congress after Rep. Patrick Kennedy decided this week not to seek re-election.

Bill Lynch said Saturday that he will focus on job creation while running to represent a state with nearly 13 percent unemployment. He said small business owners are struggling to get credit even after government bailouts of Wall Street firms.

The 52-year-old attorney has resigned as head of the state Democratic Party to pursue Kennedy's seat in the first Congressional district.

Lynch is the brother of Attorney General Patrick Lynch, one of two Democratic candidates running for Rhode Island governor. He lives in Pawtucket, where his father served as mayor.
